Well, the old GW washes came in a dropper bottle. But now I just use a brush as a dropper and mix it up on a little tin foil I use as a palate. It's not a exact ratio, just err of the side of too light. But it sounds like Jeff is using the GW wash straight out of the pot. So there is no right or wrong.
I prefer to drybrush first, then wash. Opposite Jeff. For me, it evens out the drybrush better that way.

Yeah, evilgit is right. I used the wash straight out of the pot, and he's right there's no right or wrong.

I would warn you against adding flock to the bases though. Well, that is unless you want to start storing these things in a specially padded case. In my experience, soft plastic minis like the ones that come in the board games are a bit bendy which means sand and grass and stuff breaks off a bit easier. Plus, I've found boardgame players handle painted minis a bit rougher than other minis painters do. Save the detail for when you're dropping hundreds of dollars on warhammer and you and your opponent respect the craft.

Yeah, the player type thing is true, but really bendy plastic isn't the best to paint with and the odds of flock breaking off is greater.

I'd suggest painting the base with some 'texture' then putting a nice black ring around the base to give it some polish.

I painted these FoD minis ages ago, but I think the base was painted dark brown, drybrushed with a light brown over most the base, then a dark brown wash over the whole base. Gave the bases a cool marbled/textured looked.

(I take pictures like ass...shoulda took that up instead of painting minis...)

I wash with black or dark brown paint thinned way out with water. Works fine.

Love the base. It'll look very clean on the board.

robartin,

Did you color code base rings based on starting alignment?

My second toad. Dry brushed this one brown. I think I did a better job with the wash, too.

I hate painting, even though I played Warhammer and Warmachine for about 8 years. However I felt like I had to paint my Mansions of Madness figures. As mentioned earlier in the thread, I used the super basic method of basecoat, wash, drybrush. Most of them turned out pretty well for what I wanted. Too bad after finishing the monsters I got burned out and only half finished the investigators. Now with the expansion out, I have to paint up the new monsters, so maybe it will be the impetus I need to finish the investigators.

Good luck.

Don't fear the Reaper! I'm really happy with the way this turned out. I started with a spray on grey primer from Krylon, on the skull and his hand I used reaper Leather White, for the staff I used citadel Bestial Brown and finally used a citadel black wash over the whole thing. I was a little worried that the wash wouldn't be enough to get the right look on his cloak, but I used it straight from the pot with no dillution and this is what I got!
