What Minis Are You Painting?

The camera picks up everything. I'll finish a figure and think "lookin' good!" Then I photograph it and I'm just like "well, shit."

Blue is interesting, I'm sure Khorne would send him home from the muster but hey- you got the effect! Red pauldron is a nice touch.

What kind of light are you all painting under? If you haven't already, I recommend picking up a desk lamp and a 5000K bulb, which you can do for under $30 easy. It will really make a lot of thoses "misses" easier to catch.

I like the blue on that figure. It certainly makes it standout from the sameness of a lot of Khorne minis' red and brass.

Some stuff from the past week:

Screamers of Tzeentch- just kind of free balled it on these. They were a mess. Lots of glaze/washing. Mostly got the effect I wanted

The Getalong Gang

All nice. The Screamers are awesome. I really like the purple to blue blend you did and particularly the purple fin on the left one.

Can you believe that fin was billed as an "optional" bit? It is very clearly not optional at all!

Yeah, they're pretty sloppy close up but the arms' length look is decent and I got the color grading that I wanted for the most part along with the "yellow eyes, big bone teeth" thing I was aiming for too. I threw like every painting technique there is at these things, sort of correcting as I went on. There's layering, drybrushing, wet blending, stippling, glazes, washes, thinning with water, thinning with medium, palette blending...my hands were completely blue and purple when they were finished. The thing is, it actually only took about an hour to do all three.

The tattoos on that Ogroid...OMG, that was tough. They look pretty bad close up. The tutorial I followed on that one said "skip this step if you aren't confident" so I barged right on in with it. I was using an Army Painter Psycho, which I think actually hurt the task because it is thin enough to slip right down into the groove...it just doesn't load much paint. So you have to reload, and OOPS, you've nicked the edge with a dot. I kind of wish that I had done just a simple technique there, a simpler glazing/washing thing.

Here's a kind of sideways request. I'm trying to find minis that are useful for early-mid 18th century adventuring types. It's kind of a thin patch for historical war gaming figures, but maybe there's some swashbuckling pirate type stuff I haven't spotted already. Does anyone know of any viable places to look?

Maybe look at the 'pirates' and 'fantasy pirates' from Black Scorpion.

Steampunk minis: www.lead-adventure.com/index.php?cPath=2...c66079b053a13a3a8111

I know I've stumbled across more 18th century minis before, the problem is finding them again.

Here, we go Westwind Miniatures have a bunch of Victorian era gothic minis. Is that the time period you're looking for?

Thanks everyone for the minis links. I went with Black Scorpion pirates for now, though the Wargames Foundry civilians look excellent also.
