Games that don't exist but should. 02 Mar 2017 15:59 #244732

I'm too lazy to find the old thread. If you include a game in this discussion, please attach a theme, because games without themes are really just a pile of mechanics.

I would like to see a solo game based on the book Moby Dick, something like that Nemo game from VPG.

- You could cruise around and try to get whale oil
- You have to juggle your harpooners and decide how to arrange your crews on the whaling boats
- There could be a Starbuck track. He is the most competent crew member, and is bound by his Christian morality to obey Ahab, but if you push him too far he might take the blunderbuss/gun and shoot you in your sleep, thus damning himself to hell while saving the crew
- There are like nine encounters with other whaling ships, and each of them involves transactions and/or potential conflict or competition for whales
- There is a degree of existential horror that is right up there with HP Lovecraft

Maybe it would look something like Eldritch Horror. I doubt it would ever be popular given the theme.

You have enough to go on for a $500k Kickstarter there.

Do it. Moby Dick is famous and in the public domain, and it's a great subject for a boardgame.

If Kickstarter, then you will need nice ship minis, and then you should go with a BIG (think Cthulhu in Cthulhu Wars) mini for Moby Dick. This will inevitably trigger many remarks at TOS about big dicks, but will also make everybody want one.

That's brilliant. I'd design that if it were my idea. Totally. And I'd buy that, despite not liking solo games (Nemo's War is my all time fave solo game)

I like it. Like you said, it's a story that's rich with content that's suitable for board gaming. You'd have to design the game rounds in such a way that they matched that wavelike "short chapter, long chapter" cycle of the book too. Oh, and you have built-in titles for the inevitable dice-only and cards-only spin-offs! Moby Deck and Moby Dice, of course.

I'll see myself out.

Guys, guys... a Moby Rondel.

THANK YOU I AM ON MY WAY TO THE BANK BECAUSE OF ALL THE MONEY

I know we're talking board games here, but I've mentioned wanting a whaling video game. Something that gets it right. That was a frigging brutal business. Can you imagine cutting up 100-foot-long cows with knives bigger than yourself? Fucked up. Boiling big hanks of fat in kettles? The smell. Ugh. I bet they stank for a month after returning to port.

What the hell ever happened to to that new Nemo's War anyway? That probably is one of the best solo games ever made...

As for whaling, I am sure you could do that with worker placement and deck building. With a deluxe Dick miniature.

I'd be in on that KS, too, if you had this for a soundtrack:

A decent Indiana Jones themed game should exist, but doesn't. Meaty and big and epic like Arkham Horror, but with some modern polish. Includes some press-your-luck puzzly aspects, deduction, exploration, combat, traveling, and is playable either as a solo/co-op against AI baddies, or with someone controlling the Nazis or crooks. As a straight-up description, that's almost Fortune & Glory, except that was a tedious dice roller. Make it smart and require some real decisions and not just depend on the dice for everything. Eldritch Horror is pretty close, too, and better than F&G, but still not quite what I'd have in mind.

A new Indy movie is coming in 2019... FFG, get the license now and get to work!

That reminds me, whatever happened with Thrilling Tales of Adventure? It sounded amazing, and I know it was getting raves from some playtesters, but I guess it never quite was publishable, eh? Seems like that would have been a prime thing for Kickstarter, but it was before that time. Is Jason still around here? Maybe Zev could help develop that for WizKids or something. Anyway, I feel like that might still have success in the gaming world with the right development.

Have you single handedly created a new genre of games called 'DICK SALAD'?

Beware, Feld might sue.

Oftentimes defeat is splendid, victory may still be shame;
Luck is good, the prize is pleasant but the glory's in the game!
