"Alive 2007" is really good. Since everything they do is digital anyway, the usual "doesn't sound so good live" problem isn't there. There are some fun mixes.

I think I'd still go with "Discovery" as an entry point though, because it's a _masterpiece_. One of the best _albums_ of the past 20 years. Perfect pop, dancefloor fillers, sophisticated programming, and they can somehow make the numbskull lyrics to "One More Time" seem like an end-of-the-world rally for the human race.

Great, great band. I ignored them for years until one day I was eating in a sushi restaraunt and "Harder Better Faster Stronger" came on and it blew me away. Guess Kanye was too.

Morgan, did you see one of the LCD SOundsystem shows with Liquid Liquid? I'd kill to see those guys.

I saw LCD several months ago and it was amazing...great set, great show, very powerful stuff. "Sound of Silver" is one of my all-time favorite albums.

James Murphy is just awesome...he's definitely self-deprecating. When I saw him, he had a tore down Yves Saint-Laurent shirt on. It's probably like a $200 t-shirt. But he was wearing it like a $10 Budweiser one. "Fat guy in a t-shirt doing all the singing" indeed.

So a good buddy of mine who's a regular at the bar and on our APA pool team is this Murphy guys assistant. I've never heard LCD soundsystems music so I didn't know who he was until a few weeks back when all that controversy about their last concerts broke and I put 2 and 2 together. I feel goofy saying this, but my babysitters a huge fan. My friends getting her into the Terminal 5 shows.

I've been on a Steve Marriott kick this week, so I've been listening to a lot of Small Faces and Humble Pie. I've been listening to Morphine, another great band that I completely missed while they were together depite numerous oppurtunities to see them. Hell, I was at some gigs they played and missed them. I'm really digging these guys. Also there's been quite a bit of classic rock radio at the construction site that is my house. When the shit did Greenday and the Beastie Boys become 'classic rock'? Betwwen this and the LCD soundsystem stuff, I'm feeling pretty old...

Jermaine Stewart eh? Might this have something to do with last Tuesday?

Kylesa's been on pretty heavy rotation too. Not crazy about their newest album, but these guys are great.

What I've been listening to for the past month or so:

From halfturkey.blogspot.com/2011/03/project-250-reviewing-1985.html , The Jesus and Mary Chain – Psychocandy, The Fall – This Nation’s Saving Grace, The Sisters of Mercy – First and Last and Always, Pentagram – Pentagram, The Cult – Love.

From halfturkey.blogspot.com/2011/03/project-250-reviewing-1986.html , The Chameleons – Strange Times, Talk Talk – The Colour of Spring, Fates Warning – Awaken the Guardian , The Triffids – Born Sandy Devotional, The Triffids – In the Pines.

For those who don't want to read the links, JMC, Pentagram, and Fates Warning are the big winners.

Currently working on 1987: Dinosaur Jr. – You're Living All Over Me, Eric B. & Rakim– Paid in Full, Spacemen 3 – The Perfect Prescription, The Swans – Children of God, Candlemass – Nightfall.

Damn son, that's some awesome stuff.

"Psychocandy" is one of the best albums ever, "This Nation's Saving Grace" is a masterpiece, "First and Last and Always" is the best Sisters record, the Pentagram record is their best, and "Love" is a great one too (prefer "Electric" though- or the old Southern Death Cult/Death Cult records).

"Paid in Full"...hell yes. But it doesn't have their best cut, "Lyrics of Fury" on it.

I saw the Swans very last show...amazing stuff. I used to see both Michael Gira and Jarboe around all the time, they live not too far from me. She's a scary lady.

Looks like '87's gonna be a very good year Dave. Those are some great albums. The Swans played here just a few months ago. Two nights, one at a Masonic temple in Brooklyn and the other in the lower east side. I couldn't make either one. Meant to put that one in the 'what bands did you miss' thread.

Sitting here thinking how feasible it would be for me to hop in the car for Karaoke tonight... Loved that crazy little broad!

Maybe next week.

On Monday I went to see Crocodiles in Nuremberg, unfortunately they had technical difficulties and could only play 5 or so songs. Regardless, I can't recommend them enough, esp. to fans of JAMC, Spacemen 3, Echo & the Bunnymen, ... they're currently on tour: www.myspace.com/crocodilescrocodilescrocodiles

Saw Geoff Berner in Utrecht Synagogue on Thursday, listening to his new CD now.

Hard to recapture the intensity of a live performance. There may have been about 40 people there. It is so good to be close to a performer, who talks to you directly rather than shouting some bland "how are you?" into a faceless mass.

Berner's introductions to his songs, his icy wit and charm and the intimacy of a three piece band (accordeon, violin and drum) made it an unforgettable experience. Songs like Facher, Maginot Line and Rabbi Berner Finally Reveals His True Religious Agenda are great fun, but he delves deep for Mayn Rue Platz, One Shoe and Volcano God. THis is where he becomes chilling.
So some of the audience decided to quit before the end, as he obviously doesn't shy away from his more controversial bits in a religious house. Good for him.

Glad to take two CDs off him. Ridiculously cheap as well. How does this guy make a living?

Other CD is an oldie. Good too. But he sounds more like Joe Jackson, hardly time to breathe between lines as his anger and incredulity pours out.

By the way, this guy is a Vancouver native son JonJacob and DocMabuse should check him out once he gets back BC-side.

I've found a liking to Julian Cope's "Peggy Suicide". Can somebody recommend any of his other albums?

Also - finally - Gaslight Anthem grew on me. I'm enjoying the '59 Sound very much.

Yeah, they have a similar vibe as the Replacements. IMO, they're the best new American rock band of the past 10 years. Easily.

Anyway, here's another cut from the past.

Added:
Wow, hearing that made me go back and look up some other favorites I was listening to in the 90's.

I caught The Strike once in '99 or '00 then they just disappeared. Unfortunate. Great Album.

Ahhh...Leatherface. Add them to the list of bands I never got to see but always wanted to. 'Mush' was one of the great punk albums of the 90's. I'd like to post the whole thing here.
