That reminds me, I just went and saw the new 3D version of The Great Gatsby... it was almost like the sobering examination of the unrestrained materialism and absent moral centre of the roaring twenties JUMPED right out at ya

I don't see anyway I'm going to be able to avoid seeing Eli Roth's THE GREEN INFERNO. This seems up Barnes' alley since it's Roth's tribute film to Cannibal Holocaust.

Anyway, the trailer got my bloodlust pumping like crazy. I'm sure it will be terrible but I don't see how I'm not going to see it

The Walk

Wasn't sure if I should bother seeing this, as I'd already seen the Man on Wire documentary and figured, well, that's that. But this film was fantastic. Robert Zemeckis is hit-or-miss for me (though his hits have been huge), but the way he depicts things here was very well done, and this was another stellar performance by Joseph Gordon-Leavitt.

I have a pretty strong fear of heights, so several moments made me *extremely* uncomfortable, but that's the value of a film like this for me... to appreciate that accomplishment and that experience vicariously, and as a metaphor. Some early reviews have talked about it being only so-so up to the point of the WTC walk and then magnificent from that point, but I disagree... Everything leading up to that is vital to the appreciation of that moment, and most of the rest of it is quite entertaining in its own right. But yes, the actual walk is powerfully portrayed, and I could really feel the joy of that, without any fear or uneasiness, which was amazing. And in a beautiful way, this movie is a love letter to the Twin Towers.

Also, one of the few movies (Gravity being another) that I think is totally worth seeing in IMAX 3D.

that almost describes to a T my impression of Man on Wire. I've been hesitant to see The Walk since I think Man on Wire might be the best documentary I've ever seen (one of the best for sure). I think it's one of the best movies of the past decade too.

It's hard to imagine how this could better given that Man on Wire has the actual guy that did it with the actual stock footage of it actually happening. Nuts.

Gonna be hard to see The Walk too what with Sicario and The Martian opening this weekend too. Sheesh...where did all these movies come from?!

I saw Everest. I liked it but it made me want to go read Into Thin Air again. It did a nice job capturing the physicality of disaster and the storm, but did not do the sheer confusion that Into Thin Air prominently describes... also goes pretty easy on the team by deemphasizing what a huge fuck up the thing was from a planning perspective.

That was my hesitation in going out to see it - that the movie would depict the climbers more as victims of circumstance versus the reality that poor decision making is what did them in more than anything else. How harsh was the portrayal of the Sandy Hill Pittman character ?

She is virtually not in it at all and they don't spend much time showing just how fucked up it is to have someone short roped to a Sherpa for the entire trek.

They also *WAY* underplay the role of sherpas, which is *incredibly* disappointing---they should be in the background of almost every scene but you rarely notice them even if they are in the frame (the all people look the same in big coats problem plays into this). The book is also cutting commentary about how the sherpas are used and what life or death committed behavior is expected of, essentially, wage workers.

It is still worth seeing. Definitely one to see in IMAX if you can, though. I saw it in a regular theater which is fine but I think it would be worth seeking out IMAX.

I saw this yesterday and it was okay... about what I expected out of an Everest disaster movie, I suppose, but nothing more. Some good scenery shots and a little bit of a feeling for what that kind of expedition might be like. But also, it felt kind of thin; like there could have been more insights about what happened, or that the pacing could have been better, or something.

A film critic recently described an outstanding movie as having three great scenes and no bad scenes. This didn't really have any bad scenes, but no great ones, either. Maybe one as they reach the top, where you get a powerful sense of the feeling of that achievement for them. But even then, I felt a little cheated, because I don't recall there being a panorama from the top. Sure, it was focused on the people of the story and what it meant for them, but in that moment as a viewer I was like, show me the world from that view! I guess the point may be that I don't deserve that view, not having made that trek, but for a movie named Everest, the mountain itself only got a few brief glamour shots.

The cast was solid but kind of wasted... there might have been some better energy if they had used more unknowns... but I think the script and direction were probably the problems, being sort of by-the-numbers. Eh, I shouldn't even say "problems." It's fine for what it is. But I'm sure the book is far more interesting.

Going to see The Martian today and can't wait!

I saw The Martian and enjoyed it. It's touching, and really smart in its application of humor.

Highly recommend, but only if you're looking for something like Castaway or that Redford movie on the sinking boat.

Some action but not much.

Ridley Scott has again proven why he has a Bad Mother Fucker wallet.

Yeah, The Martian was great. It reminded me of a science-porn version of Cast Away, and moreso Apollo 13. (Amazing to think that in the case of Apollo 13, it was all real.) This was depicting a much bigger scale situation than that, of course, but the idea to "science the shit out of" the problem was very similar. I really liked the attitudes everyone has in this film... very positive and life-affirming. Even the NASA guy (Jeff Daniels) who is kind of a dick at first comes around pretty quickly to be helpful and encouraging. As Pete says, there's not a lot of action, but it is very entertaining and the final action sequence was really cool.

I watched Re-Animator for the first time last night, at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival. I had always heard that it was okay, but nothing special. Maybe it was because I was in a theater with a ton of people, but I thought it was great. It was pretty funny (in a good way) and I really enjoyed it. The Q&A afterward with Jeffrey Combs was pretty entertaining as well. Nice guy.

Edit - As an aside, it was a 35mm version of the film, so it was pretty strange to see all the "noise" on the film itself instead of the crystal clear digital projection that I've grow used to over the years. I think it really added to the tone of the film.
