LOL....ah the beginning days of Magic Realm. Know this: not every character can defeat every monster. If you can't defeat it and you cant' run from it, get the hell out of the hex because if it blocks you, you're done....

This is especially true of characters with lots of slow attacks vs. creatures with fast attacks. I've lost track of how many Barbarians or Paladins I've seen killed by goblins, wolves or bats.

You really should read over the hirelings section to make your life easier. Those big, slow characters that die to stupid shit? A band of rogues can save your ass with these guys and make the game much more enjoyable.

Everyone will have a different take on the best starting character, but I personally recommend the Woods Girl.

I'd go Barbarian to learn combat, Swordsman to learn everything else. I heart MR.

I thought I had a Magic Realm trade setup, but the other guy backed out. so went ahead and ordered mage knight from CSI using my free Gift certificate I won from them.

but man, 3 math trades and some 1-1 trades have netted me in the last month:

Heroquest
MonPoc:Voltron
Cyclades
Nations at War: White Star Rising
Normandy '44
Tide of Iron + Normandy + Days of the Fox

I bought Deadwood yesterday and played it last night. This is actually a really cool wild west game. The only complaint I have is that the numbers and iconography are hard to read from a distance, especially on the cowboy tokens.

Re: What board games are you BUYING?

I have been considering the Pathfinder beginner box. I've never played Pathfinder but have heard a lot of great things. Amazon has it for only $23, and for that I feel like I'd get my money's worth only playing it once or twice.

I seriously question being able to get a group together for it though. We mainly play boardgames, but have recently played a couple of introductory sessions of Deathwatch. It's the first pen and paper RPG I've played in many years, and frankly I've found it boring. Too much downtime, and your turn can be over in an instant. I love the 40k universe, so it's not the theme.

Does anyone have the Pathfinder Beginner box? Would I feel like I have enough to get some good gaming in, or is it really just a teaser that makes you need the books?

I played this at ConnCon this year and hot damn if this isn't mean little "take that" game with a worker placement veneer. Far less Euro than I was expecting it to be. Lots of delicious interaction.

Indeed. Full of fuckery from the gunfights to some of the buildings that hurt other people. I'm a big fan. I fucked some rules up so I can't wait to play it correctly.

Re: What board games are you BUYING?

Just bought Conquest of Paradise, an older 4x title from GMT. It was 18 bucks at my FLGS so I HAD to get it. This game's been on my radar for some time. I like historical simulations and my wife likes exploration games so I thought I'd give it a go.

We're playing our first game on the weekend. Once I learn it, we'll get some friends together and I'll play with four.

It definitely has an older look with the lack of a mounted board (fits my Twilight Struggle plexi glass sheet perfectly) and cardboard chits but I've found most of GMT's games to have a solid design and good playability. I've read the rules through a few times and think I've got the game play down. From what I can see it looks pretty good.

I will say the designer put his heart into this one. There's a separate booklet several pages longer than the rules of designer notes that gives the history of most of the locations and cards in the game.

You're ancient Polynesians in canoes exploring and setting island chains in the Pacific circa 500 AD. Good times.

According to GMT I just bought Virgin Queen.

Angola, Crusade and Revolution & Stonewall Jackson's Way remain in the cue.

Re: What board games are you BUYING?

mike, it isn't a bad game at all. It has a nice war-development balance. It's a good, simple civ game.
