TOPIC: What board games are you BUYING?

Re: What board games are you BUYING?

I put in an order for Quarmageddon, Cosmic Alliance, Galaxy Trucker, Catacombs with the big expansion. Catacombs looks kickass. I hope it is as fun as it seems to be.

I'm also eagerly awaiting Descent 2nd Edition. I wonder when Coolstuff will have it.

I'm thinking about springing for the Battles of Westeros expansions, but they don't seem to really add anything to the game.

Re: What board games are you BUYING?

I just bought a copy of Squad Leader. As an ASL fan and regular Combat Commander player I really have no use for this as a game, as such. But I recently realised that I just had to have John Hill's original designer's notes in my library. So I paid a fair price for the game itself, but a lot for 2 pages of small print. The nostalgia rush of that original box was worth the price too mind you. :)

Re: What board games are you BUYING?

I bought Samurai Battles and Sky Traders a week or two ago when they came out. The box arrived from CSI, and I...haven't had time to open the box.
I think it is now in a room somewhere filled with boxes that looks not entirely unlike the government warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

This is a pretty apt description of the entirety of Swamp Castle.

Re: What board games are you BUYING?

I just got my first order in like... a year or some shit.

Mage Knight - I was scared I wouldn't like it but it's gooood. City figs are complete crap and useless waste of plastic though. WTF is it with Wizkids and the stupid Clix?
C&C Ancients - Just wanted to try something in the C&C line. Only 340 stickers to go!
Combat Commander: Europe
LotR: Khazad Dum + 3 packs
Thunderstone: Heart of Doom - bad printing that looks terrible + missing replacement cards.
+Overpriced card sleeves and deck boxes

C&C:A is a great little game: I've not played it nearly as much as I would like, but I've always had fun with it. It's definitely the best iteration of the C&C series IMO, the one where the system and the theme match most perfectly.

And CC:E is the business. I've been playing this regularly since early 2007, and it just doesn't get old. The cardplay and other aspects of the game mean that it isn't for everyone, but I love it. If you like it enough to want to pick up any expansions, CC:M is a logical place to start because it completes the basic set. If you go that far, I would recommend Combat Commander: Resistance next, because the Partisan rules add more to the core system than anything since day 1. If you just wanted to expand on CC:E, most of the Battlepacks can be played using just CC:E (the soon-to-be reprinted Paratroopers pack especially, because CC:E was all that was out when that was first printed).

Re: What board games are you BUYING?

Cool, thanks for the suggestions JMcL63. I am an expansion slut so I'll be picking those up I'm sure. CC:E Looks pretty cool so far. I only wish they would start making 1" counters. That's one of the reasons I like Tide of Iron so much - I can see everything!

I just found out that C&C:A has wooden dice for sale. Are these like the ones in Hannibal RvC? Anybody?

Re: What board games are you BUYING?

I just received my cheapo copy of Fortress: America from EvilBay. Now that the reprint is out, the originals are going for pretty cheap. Probably will never play it, but happy to own it.

Re: What board games are you BUYING?

CC:E is a great game. I do recommend sticking with smaller unit sizes. As tempting as it is to do a company on company fight, the card-driven gameplay doesn't handle it well. the game works best when all the various squads are able to maneuver, when you have more units than your leaders can really handle...you end up with squads who kind of get left behind, as you can't afford to spend a card moving them forward.

I disagree strongly with this. Sure, all those extra units do place extra demands on your card-management, but good play will help you deal with that. The key? Proper task-force organisation and mission selection. That is to say: you'll always typically have enough leaders in a company to have 3 task forces:

  • Firebase.
  • Primary maneouvre/assault group
  • Reserve.

Get your firebase into position first (if it's not already in position at setup) to lay down suppressing fire to cover the advance of your primary manoeuvre group. Then you get your primary manoeuvre group onto their first objective. The key trick at this point is twofold:

  • Have a clear mission for your reserve- secondary firebase, or an advance along an axis different from that of the primary manoeuvre group.
  • Don't get so caught up in the firefight that you forget to bring the reserve up until it's too late for them to have any impact.

And don't forget: if you think a company will overload your hand, then having 3 separate task-forces on the attack will overload the defender even more so.

Re: What board games are you BUYING?

Fucking Tanga. I bit the bullet and bought three games... Grand total 46 bucks.
Nostra City - RESPECT!
Age of Gods - curious about the game. If it sucks, then I'll trade it off or SS it.
And the Freedom thingy game. Falling Skies ish. See above what I plan to do with if it sucks.
Imperial: Yes, we released the Great Darkness... Sue us.
