What TV SHOWS are you watching?
So far, I am sort of enjoying the show. A teenage girl, played by the wonderfully expressive Emma Dumont, gets pulled into Manson's budding cult, and her parents ask a veteran cop to look into the matter. The cop and the girl's mother have some old history together, as do Manson and the girl's father. The cop is competent but has issues, and the story often goes off on tangents involving more regular police work, as this investigation is unofficial. The cop gets paired up with a young, edgy undercover cop who is young and scruffy enough to potentially infiltrate the cult. This whole setup is established early in the first episode, and then things take off.
This is not a documentary. I am willing to bet that the only historical figure in the main cast is Manson himself. But the story-telling is good, and the show excels at capturing the clothes and music of the era. While the first episode tended to lean on the usual hits that Hollywood likes to use to portray the '60s (White Rabbit, Paint It Black, etc.) subsequent episodes dive much deeper into the music of the period. For example, the music at a Republican fund raiser is Sinatra and jazz, and some of the more mundane scenes delve into the cheesier mainstream pop of the era.
The best comparison that I can make in terms of other shows would be to say that Aquarius is like a cross between Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire. Both Manson and Duchovny's characters are complex and interesting, undergoing actual character development. Even the teenage girl is interesting to watch, changing from a nervous suburban girl to a more confident hippy adult. But we all know that Manson's story is going to turn ugly, so it should be interesting to see how these characters continue to change.

The show's timeline is about 14-15 years after RofS and 5 years or so before ANH, meaning Luke & Leia should be roughly the same age as Ezra Bridger. In the Princess episode we see a fully grown Leia in command of an important mission. Not for the first time either, apparently she's adept at "getting her ships stolen" by the Rebels. Anyways, this can only mean that Leia's totally jailbait!

My inner Medieval Warfare nerd was insulted that the townsfolk, armed with sticks and armored with a burlap shirt, wouldn't pick up a bunch of free chain mail and swords laying around after a little battle that they somehow won. However they did it, it wasn't with the Welsh bowmen that literally lived in the neighborhood. At that point I could no longer suspend my disbelief. I bitched about it to the missus, but she just looked at me like I was an idiot. That's not news to her, though, and I guess she loves me in spite of my inner 13-year-old.
I gave up after about 4 episodes. None of the characters had the depth of any in SONS, and Sutters insistence on casting his wife with a ridiculous accent was just more self indulgence. Hopefully this will humble him a bit and his next project will have more focus.
The Last Kingdom is good, as someone else mentioned. Another series to check out is VIKINGS . Superb cast and great visuals, esp considering what's probably a shoestring budget.

I would argue that Vikings is the Ameritrashiest show on TV right now (the previous champ was obviously Spartacus), and I mean that in all the best ways possible. I love that show. The production values are very impressive considering this airs on the History Channel, not HBO. Season 4 starts up next week, and I'm very excited. Season 3 was entertaining, but a bit uneven. Ragnar fighting the French was awesome, but all the other plot lines dragged. They need to figure out some better storylines for the "back home" scenes while Ragnar's off kicking ass somewhere.

Ooh I've been looking forward to this one. Tried to read the book ages ago and kinda bogged down in the unrelenting period drama-ness of it, which I find slightly more palatable in video form.
Total opposite for me on the book, I really enjoyed it. The unrelenting footnotes were a feature for me, not a distraction.
I'll definitely have to check this out, I had no idea it existed until this thread.
(but I think your experience with the book is more typical. Most of my friends abandoned it quite quickly.)
I think I liked the footnotes more than the main story for the bits I read, actually. It just took so long to get anywhere; I tend to have patience but either I didn't when I read it or I ran out.
Ive ground to a halt about 220 pages into the book.
In other news i just watched the abominable bride. A little too clever.
