The Raven has Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, and Peter Lorre. While the three also did The Comedy of Terrors, The Raven is a much more unique movie that feels almost like a strange Victorian-era fantasy movie about wizards.

House on Haunted Hill is a pretty straight Old Dark House sort of movie. It is played fairly straight, but Price's character is so gloriously sardonic that it is a lot of fun to watch. And William Castle's movies ALWAYS had a certain gleeful fun to them, which the remakes never manage to get across. The opening scene has him handling out pistols to his guests in coffin-shaped gift boxes. For a similar, but infinitely more malevolent host movie, check out "The Last of Sheila" where James Coburn screws with a bunch of people's heads for 2 hours.

Fearless Vampire Killers is intended to be funny in a weird and somewhat uncomfortable Roman Polanski way. But I've always thought his "Pirates" was also a hoot, although shot through with dark, drab, and depressing.

That you find Dead Alive comedic and Reanimator not is interesting, and means that comedy is a far more subjective topic than I had originally guessed. Dead Alive definitely goes for more completely over-the-top humor with a kung-fu priest, the lawnmower scene, and some of the puppet work. Reanimator all hinges on Jeffery Combs, though. Herbert West is so gleefully, gloriously mad, and has some of the best lines in horror.

That said, you might not find some on my list (especially Cemetery Man) quite that funny. Cemetery Man is played absolutely dead straight, just in a cemetery where the dead usually come back to zombified life. It is mostly that farce combined with some pretty odd characters that makes the movie.

Society is a weird social commentary as horror. It is also an amazing showcase of late 80's gore and makeup effects. Slither is kind of an homage to this period of movies, but some of the originals like this and Bride of the Reanimator are interesting to watch just technically.

Dolls is also pretty straight horror, but actually quite creepy as hell in parts. Part of my lighthearted view is the fact that the dolls themselves are understandable monsters, and not random malevolence.

Undead is a new zealand zombie movie with some weird plot twists, and the awesome action hero named Leslie who pretty much goes full-out Ash throughout the entire movie.

Dead Snow is the norwegian nazi zombie movie. Starts out really serious, then gradually gets less so as things progress.

Uba mentioned Suck. That *IS* a great movie. I didn't list it because it didn't even strike me as a horror movie. But Vampires, Rock and Roll, surprisingly good original songs, and screamingly funny in parts. The level of crazy and unhinged punk attitude reminds me of Repo Man, but with a much higher level of polish.

Another cute thing from Netflix streaming is "Bloody Mallory". It is a very low budget french movie that is kind of a completely campy Buffy ripoff.

And also worth finding is the Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc Sec. Kind of a cross between Q, The Mummy, and Tomb Raider. But based on a French comic book series and directed by Luc Besson. Tricky to acquire, however, as it was never released in the US.

The Raven - What a great movie! They certainly don't make em like this anymore. It just has this cool atmosphere about it, plus Price, Lorre and Karloff are wonderful. I love this movie.

Black Sheep - I thought I was going to love this, but it fell extremely flat for me. Awesome idea, but the execution was pretty boring. It was desperately trying to capture the frantic, zany unpredictably of a Peter Jackson or early Same Raimi movie...it didn't come close.

Feast - Not bad for a more recent flick. It has some great stuff, but I wasn't a fan of the super hectic editing during scenes where the monsters attack.

Fido - This is a highly underrated zombie comedy. Just really well done.

Re-Animator/Dead Alive - These are both splatter classics. Dead Alive is more blatantly over the top, but both are good for guts and laughs.

Return of the Living Dead - Great flick that doesn't get the nearly enough respect. The late great Dan O'Bannon did a hell of job with this.

The Frighteners - Peter Jackson fans seems divided on this one, but I like it. I still need to check out the director cut blu-ray...

Here a few more to chew on

Night of the Creeps - Great mis-mash of sci-fi, horror, Tom Atkins and college. I love this friggin movie.

Critters - Gremlins rip off that is still pretty good. I love it when these little bastards start talking and it provides us with lovely sub-titles. Not a classic, but a fun little movie.

The Cottage - This one was awesome. It reminds me a bit of From Dusk till Dawn, in that it feels like two completely different movies sewn together. This one melds a small time crook movie with a hillbilly slasher flick. If you enjoy British humor this one is a riot.

Piranha 3D - This was completely and utterly silly. It has some terrible editing (damn you super fast cuts), but the insane violence, copious amounts of nudity and toilet humor help keep it afloat. I can't believe the sequel is actually getting released in theaters! Fans of bad taste cinema rejoice...

Bad Taste - Speaking of Bad Taste...Can't forget about Peter Jackson's first film. If you watch stuff like this or Meet the Feebles, it is almost unfathomable that he would go on to direct the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Great titles everyone. Some I have seen, some I didn't know about or never saw.

I did confuse Black Sheep with Undead. I saw the latter though. There were some funky stuff in that movie but the big fisherman guy or whatever was great (I think at one point he hung upside down from a doorframe to take out some undead.)

Here's one: Monster Club. It is a compilation of stories, some serious, some played lighter. All centered around Price's vampire telling the stories to John Carradine's writer.

In the end we are given the message that humans should join the Monster Club cause we're the biggest monsters of all, that despite not having claws or fangs etc., we are still able to kill thousands with our ingenuity.

Also, some of the acts in the club are priceless.

Evil Aliens - Dead Alive with aliens instead of zombies, with some X-files feel added

Return of the Living Dead-maybe the best funny horror movie. Trash is getting naked again.

Spider Baby-written and directed by Jack Hill (who later gave us made-in-the-Philippines Roger Corman-financed classics about women in prison), with Lon Chaney Jr. and Sid Haig. De-evolved cannibals living in a mansion. But in a good way.

The Perfect Host-David Hyde Pierce gets all kinds of weird on a derelict that ends up in his house.

Rubber-If you can handle the stupidity and non-existent production values of this movie it's pretty funny. An evil tire murders and wreaks havoc in the desert.

Attack Girls Swim Team Vs. the Undead-one of many Japanese movies movies shot on video with a super low budget about pretty young girls in horror-type situations. These can go from no nudity to bordering on soft porn so use discretion. A lot of people hate these movies.

A Bucket of Blood-Roger Corman cheeziness. Pretty stupid but fun to watch.

Zombie Women of Satan-British shot on video movie with lots of t&a and zombie chicks in lingerie. I fucking loved that movie.

They Live-more SF than horror but everyone needs to see this movie at least once. I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum. Also, yuppie aliens.

A bit like Shaun of the Dead but funnier."
I want that hour and a half of my life back, you wanker! It was utterly dire. How you can possibly compare it to Shaun of the Dead is beyond me, let alone claim it's funnier... Were you stoned, pissed, and buggering a camel at the time? Good god man, what were you thinking?

P.S. Sorry, it's not Friday, guess I'm a day late.
P.P.S. Guess I'm convincing moofrank even more that comedy is a far more subjective topic than he had originally guessed.
P.P.P.S. :p

ZMan: Monster Club: excellent film, great recommendation.
