Overthinking Ghostbusters

This Ghostbusters talk is reminding me of Michael Moorcock's introduction to the 1995 printing of his HAWKMOON series (which I happen to be reading). In it he writes:

"A critic who, detecting some metaphor, a bit of irony, parody or conscious symbolism in this work, has no more discovered profundity here than a French intellectual at a Jerry Lewis retrospective."

Hmmm. Who you gonna call?

Also, NYC is the very center of the civilized world.

Yeah, fuck NYC. Don't get me wrong; it's a wonderful place to visit. Awe-inspiring. I absolutely love going there.

But, as someone who has to live in the state of New York, seriously, fuck NYC. It's all well and good that you guys get to live in the Rome of the modern age, but the rest of us get to watch NY slide further into pauperhood year after year because our state legislature is dominated by metropolitan, liberal political attitudes from NYC.

On the plus side, if you live in Upstate New York, you're never more that a stone's throw away from a fucking prison, which means that there's always a possibility that I'll mugged while walking to the store for some beer by some uncivilized felon from the very center of the civilized world. So, you know, thanks for that.

A bit off-topic, I know, but the rest of New York is a hell of a nice place, too. There's some goddamned beautiful country up here with a lot of history behind it. It's my home, and I love it. It's a real bummer to watch businesses, people, and opportunities continually heading for the hills because we can't run a mostly rural state like every other mostly rural state.

But then, you smug assholes have the nerve to sit there and run your fucking gibblets about what hot shit you are, and your city is. You talk to anyone from Upstate like we're primitive cave men, drive the cost of state public services into the stratosphere, and enforce oppressive regulatory burdens on businesses across all of NY. Then, while we're struggling to find one of the few remaining stable jobs that'll cover the state's insanely high cost of living, you call us freeloaders because you contribute a few billion more dollars income tax revenues than you get back in services. That is to say, services urban voters and politicians decided the entire state could afford when we very clearly can't.

So fuck you, NYC. Yeah, that's my message to ya': fuck you, and kiss my ass.

You know, put that way NYC does sound a lot like ancient Rome.

Boy, that sounds an awful lot like upstate speak for 'black people.'

Plus, many of the criminals from here are not just civilized but downright cosmopolitan, especially when compared with folks from above the Bronx. I will concede that upstate is a wonderful place for weekending. I summered once in the Catskills and found it remarkably quaint.
