So, wife is in Ukraine visiting her mum and I'm not working until September so it's time to laze around and be basically hedonistic.

Netflix, WOW! Classic Albums. This is a series of documentaries (50 min) on the making of a particular classic album. I just watched Queen - A Night at the Opera which was amazing with great insights and lots of background. A brilliant album and this doc just confirmed my view.

I followed that with Meat Loaf - Bat out of Hell. Biased here, as this is just a stunner of an album from the 70's. I believe I know every track by heart. Good documentary with a much thinned out Meatloaf talking about the stage show and the exhausting schedule. Lots of archive as well as then and now stuff.

Now addicted, I then watched Steely Dan - Aja. Fagan and Becker are the quintissential totally anal guys of record production and it really comes across in this fascinating doc about a really seminal album. Ian Dury talks about how influential this album was to him and lots of Fagan and Becker then and now. Again, really enjoyed it.

I encourage everybody to watch these on streaming Netflix. Looking forward to Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and David Bowie - Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

I think that's the show that did Dark Side of the Moon too, which was very interesting. I had been unaware that Alan Parsons had played a critical role in its production. It also spoke to the market that it came out into which makes its success all the more remarkable.

Not sure if this is the same series that was on VH1 Classic but if it is, I agree it is a really good show. Even when they talk about bands or albums I'm not particularly fond of, it's still interesting.

I think its a slightly different show but same idea.

This one focuses solely on the music and leaves all the personal life shit to one side unless it directly effects the making of the album. This is quite refreshing. Many scenes of producers and artists playing single tracks from the mix and then showing how it all mixes together to make the specific sound they wanted.

We have to be thinking of the same show then. I wasn't thinking of "Behind the Music" which was with all the "how drugs stole our success" crap. This was a lot of producers breaking down the songs and talking about how the music itself all came together.

I watched the one for The Band's second album, "The Band," and found it to be pretty good and informative.

I think we'll need to find Karaoke night at WBC so ThirstyMan and Uba can perform Meatloaf's Paradise By The Dashboard Light for us. I'd pay about $2.00 to see that.

This reminds me of It Might Get Loud. Great doc made in 2010 with guitarists Jack White, Jimmy Page and The Edge. These guitar legends get together to jam, discuss their musical influences and the effect it had on their own personal styles.

Seeing the Edge manipulate his electronics to create U2's distinctive sound was particularly interesting. Even though he's older now, Page's face lights up like a kid when he plays. Well worth watching.

I have the Maiden Number of the Beast dvd, it's great. They also did one for Priest's British Steel, Metallica's Black Album, Deep Purple...
