The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Reviews

I'm trying to remember, for each instance that Bilbo went heroic, were the dwarves in the position to do so? It seems they are always captured, trapped or simply hanging from a tree, while Bilbo is available due to luck, agility, or the ring.

I'm okay with Bilbo putting on the ring in the Woodland Realm to unjail his short furry friends, no problem there. I'd also be okay with him cutting down his companions out of the Mirkwood trees if he did so in a burglar-like fashion. It's more that in that instance he becomes the spider-slayer of legend and isn't just getting lucky with spiders falling on Sting while he lies on his belly but he's actually attacking them. That action shouldn't even be in his deck of cards. He'd free the dwarves and let them fight his way out for him. That's his role and his character.
I'm surprised his first instinct when encountering Smaug (waking him up a-la-Pippin-Took) was to unsheathe Sting. "I got this, fellas"

Finally got around to seeing this. Initial impression is that its definitely better than the first movie. Didn't notice anymore jokes about inventing the game of golf or whatever. Really dug the elves and the barrel ride.

However it affects your perception of Tolkien or Jackson, the "inventing golf" joke is in the book.
That's not a Hollywood addition, even though it feels like one.

Just saw Desolation. Great action but where's the lighthearted humor? Why does everything have to be so serious? (I also just saw Man of Steel and I have the same complaints.)
