Let's talk about Anime!

I truly wonder, what kind of animes do users of these forums like? Do they like it at all? I don't know much about the older geeky generations, I got into this and the whole modern "geek" culture when Bleach and Naruto were all the rage.

I don't think I've seen a lot of anime and since I saw most of it when I was a teen, I don't really have many recommendations. I know most of it doesn't really hold up and even if I suppose FLCL or The Girl Who Leap Through Time do, I don't know if you guys would be interested in it. The same goes for Haruhi Suzumiya, loved the books, but they clearly speak for a younger age.

So what do you think? What do you recommend or think one should check out?

Anime is actively repelling me from purchasing that combat game that everyone is talking about. I just can't bring myself to consider it.

I've actively lobbied for an additional television show rating at the FCC -- "Weird Japanese Shit".

I'm into all the Dragonball stuff, Full Metal Alchemist, Last Exile, and Eureka 7. Also the Studio Ghibli stuff, but if you don't like those you're not human.

Broken record, no doubt, but I deeply love Cowboy Bebop. I'm generally not that into anime series, but that one really left an impression.

I did like Last Exile, though its art is not particularly on anime's centerline. As with all anime, it has the teflon coated wise ass of undeterminable gender, but in spite of that managed to tell a good story.

The game is Krossmaster

Movies and OVA tend to be better than anything which runs as a series. TV series just kind of fall into magical girl, teen romance, or total fanservice silliness.

That said, I got sucked into watching My Mental Choices are Interfering.... It somehow seems to ride a line between overly pandering, a brain dead high school romance, but manages to be enough character driven, surreal, and funny enough to get a pass.

That said, Cowboy Bebop, Boogiepop Phantom, Serial Expirements: Lain.

Liked Fist of the North Star and Lensman, thought Akira was ok, Ninja Scrolls was decent, then my anime roommate (at the time) started bringing in the tentacle stuff. I forget the name of that first big one to drop in the US in the early 90s, but by that point I was done with anime. Not the tentacle stuff itself, which didn't help, I could just never really get into the aesthetic of the whole thing.

I don't buy games that look like they've even been even remotely influenced by anime. Not a fan of the style.

I very much enjoyed Akira, absolutely hated Dragonball Z (it was good without the Z). That's pretty much all the anime I've seen, except for Kickers which ran on TV all the time when I was a kid but I can remember very little about.

Any recommendations?

I watched a bunch when I was in high school back in the VHS days. It was violent, weird and sometimes funny. I think we were mainly into it because it wasn't mainstream (at least in small-town Iowa). We had to buy everything though as the local movie rental stores (I'm really dating myself) didn't have any. The SciFi channel used to do Saturday morning anime, but it usually wasn't any good. The best they aired was Vampire Hunter D.

Then we came to the conclusion that it was all really derivative of itself and stopped watched.

Now anime is everywhere. It's all over cartoons, manga is all over the comic store and racks of Barnes & Noble. You can't be a teen today and not have seen some form of anime.

Looking back the only stuff I still enjoy is Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop. Akira is OK, but the manga series is much, much better.

Cowboy Bebop
FLCL
Samurai Champloo
Mushishi
Last Exile
Welcome to the NHK!
Akira
Ninja Scroll
Perfect Blue
Hellsing
Great Teacher Onizuka
Beck

Serial Experiment Lain and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya are two amazing series that deal with interesting subjects. Lain is about the interface between humanity and technology, Haruhi I actually can not explain without spoiling it so if you don't care about spoilers look it up or PM me.
