Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.

× Talk abut Movies & TV here. Just tell us what you have been watching. Have hyper-academic discussions on visual semiotics. Whatever, it's all good.

Don't make fun! The man was a genius!

But yeah, so sad for Hoffman. Capote, The Savages... and his minor presence in some movies added so much to those films (Big Lebowski, Red Dragon).

Of course it's sad and stuff that he has three kids and a wife but heroin addicts with wives and children die all the time. His loss is very sad for his family but we feel his loss because of the loss of a great artist. Any candle that burns out too early is always felt in this manner (Lennon, Cobain, Ledger). I don't think it shows a lack of empathy to mourn what could have been.

Yeah, but nobody here knows his children.

They know him for his great contributions to cinema and that's why his loss upsets people.

Fathers of young children, unfortunately, die all the time.

and every time I hear about it I'm sad. You don't need to know anything about his cinema contributions to be sad that a 5,7 and 10 year old lost their dad. You dont need to know his children, especially if you have your own, to empathise most strongly with that aspect of this story (even if I agree he was a great actor, but hey, they do alright for poncing around pretending shit so I don't feel sad because he won't make any more movies).

YMMV but the only gut punch I got from this story was, fuck, thats shit for his kids.

I wonder if "The Master" played a role in this...maybe the Scientologists did him in. Or not.

He was great in Talented Mr. Ripley, as well as the aforementioned roles.

Sorry, that's just weird - since I didn't know him personally, what the hell else am I going to remember him for? Any death is tragic but when great talent is lost on top of it... be it in film, music, literature or other areas of life that matter, that is th filter through most of us experience it and it often happens go back and re-listen or rediscover their work to see what it was that they had. Ledger was a great actor, Cobain was a big loss, John Lennon - that was a where were you when you heard moment for me as was stevie ray vaughan when I went through a five year blues thing. Yeah, you think, that is terrible for the families and children... but you can't help but think what the artists and actors might have produced had they lived, even at the risk, of course, that they eventually might have sucked.

also. I know it's hyperbole, but if you are reducing acting and cinema to just poncing around... I dunno. of course doctors and surgeons and people who really make a difference are the ones who should be earning hollywood salaries, not actors and people throwing pigskin around, but let's not get carried away.
