(Notice the "I.-II." at the end of the title. Yes, they were showing it in two parts (the first part ended when Alderaan was destroyed). Back then two hours were considered to be extremely long, so there was a ten minute buffet/bathroom break in the middle of the screening.)
Also, I was lying when I said these were the most WTF Star Wars posters.
Look at this. Look at this fucking thing:

Or this:
Compared to the Russians we, Hungarians, are the paragons of sanity.

Love what Tibor did with Chewie's eyes there.

Edit: I really like the first one of the Russian posters.

The first one is so weird. Vader's face plate being held together by dentist-like machinery. But I love how the x-wing is drawn and rendered. He should put a spoiler warning on the Death star image starting to blow up.

If you saw Episode I, you know why! He was Anakin's wingamn 40+ years earlier. The artist is clearly prescient. let's look for Episode 7+ clues.wice wrote: (Also, his shoulder is R2-D2, for some reason.)

Sorry, but I think the only subtle message here is "They've let me see the movie only once and ignored my request for still photos, so fuck them, I'm doing it freestyle!". And the message of the second Russian poster is "For fuck's sake, they haven't even let me see the movie! Anyway, I was told it was about a big black guy who's a cross between a robot and a bear, and there were laser beams everywhere. OK, I think I can do something like that."
BTW, I love all these posters. They are much more creative and interesting than the vast majority of contemporary official movie posters, that look like they all use the same six templates.

There is something so much more compelling about original artwork. It makes you wonder if things were better off years ago, when individual artists may or may not have had any idea what others were doing at the time. Room to be completely, unselfconciously, creative. No reference to others. Smaller world now.

Funny, Komrade, I was thinking this exact same thing. "Space Cowboy American" is what it screams to me.
