Let's Talk Black Adder

So, while revisiting Mr. Bean, it dawned on me that I've never watched Black Adder. I hear the show is highly acclaimed and it's on Netflix, so I checked it out.

One episode down, and I find it....ok. Maybe I can only take so much of Rowen's screeching voice (Bean's silent, physical humor works better for him?)...maybe it's just this specific character.

Anyway, I understand he plays a lowlife or something in this series and his hangers on goes along with him though various historical periods. Does the show pick up in later episodes? Are the other eras more entertaining?

Thoughts on the series?

You might prefer the later series. Atkinson shifts his character to a dry, caustic straight man. And he loses the screechy voice.

I love Black Adder but the tone and characterisation does change quite a bit between series. In the first (Medieval) series he is a very winny slimy character. He becomes more charismatic and clever as you go forward in time.

I would check out some of;

I like the first season, but you should watch the first episode of season 2 to get a better idea of what the rest of the series will be like. Seasons 2, 3 and 4 are closer in tone to each other than they are to season 1 b/c, as noted, the Blackadder character is changed pretty dramatically beginning with season 2. Season 1 starts a little rough, but it does pick up.

Season 2 is where the action is.

Great show. It made me realize when I was 14 how much of an asshole I would grow up to be, since I found the dark humor of black adders venomous contempt so hilarious.

An odd observation, but its weird seeing Rowan being handsome in season 2, and yet nearly every other show he is in, he looks like a malformed batrachian chomo. Odd for me anyways, since black adder the second was where I was first introduced to his acting.

Black Adder is some of Atkinson's best work, as well as that of his acting crew.

You have to understand that Atkinson is playing a different guy in each season. "Black Adder" is the ancestral title, not a particular person. So each season Atkinson invented a new character to play. The 14th century guy is obnoxious as hell, but there is some seriously funny English humor in it. It's worth continuing.

Hugh Laurie is magnificent as the Crown Prince in season three.

I personally prefer Black Adder Goes Forth, but all are good.

Mr. Bean is a waste of Atkinson's talent. His standup material is simply magnificent. Amazing Jesus is one of my favorite comedy bits ever.

You know, I've never watched much Mr. Bean, but I too decided to catch up on Black Adder a couple years ago. It's a pretty funny show, a little dark, but funny. Seasons 2-4 are more similar to each other than to season 1. I think the fourth season in WWI was my favorite.

Now I have the closing theme song stuck in my head ...

Blackadder evolves to a much more likeable and cunning human over the series while Baldrick devolves towards a potato (not a thingy shaped as a potato).
The series is worth the price just to see Rik Mayal's Lord Flashheart appearances in series 2 and 4.
The scriptwriting changed dramatically for series 2 onwards and is some of the funniest/clever writing in British comedy, courtesy of Ben Elton and Richard Curtiss, and it being implemented by Rowan, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Miranda Richardson, Tony Robinson and Tim McInnerny.

If you like this then check out the earlier The Young Ones by Ben Elton.

Black Adder from Season 2 onward is far, far better humour than The Young Ones, which has aged pretty badly IMO. The writing just gets better and better capturing true pathos in Black Adder Goes Forth (often used to teach younger students in UK schools about the terrors of WW1). Perfect comedy timing and streaks ahead of the childish Mr Bean.

The episode of Samuel Johnsons Dictionary is some of the best humour ever seen on British TV showing up Johnson as a fat, pretentious buffoon. There is just so much in all of these seasons.

Personally, I don't like Season 1 at all and find the comedy just misfires even with the addition of Peter Cook.

I've only watched part of season 4 of Blackadder, which was sort of brilliant, but the wiki entry on blackadder describes how different seasons 2-4 are and the reasons for it.
