I finished watching it last night, and I thought it was pretty awesome. It wasn't high art, but the acting got better as the series went on. Was it on par with Rome or Deadwood? I think so, for different reasons. I think some people will find it hard to look passed the massive amounts of blood, boobs and wiener for the story that is actually there. But that is too bad, as the story is there, and the acting is "pretty" good. The characters were likable. I for one am looking forward to another season.

Haven't caught the most recent episode, but I've been catching it on Starz more or less since the premier (since it airs almost non-stop between 11PM and 3AM, it's often background noise while I work). I think HBO's Rome utterly crushes this series, but I can see the similarity to Deadwood. For me though, the acting, is utterly dreadful no matter how hard I squint at it. I find it to be akin to a particularly bloody dinner theater production of Titus Andronicus.

That said, it's superb exploitation TV....

Re:SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND

I just finished episode 6. By episode 6 we're seeing more plot, back stabbing and sex and actually no gladiator battles (although there is plenty of slow motion blood splattering everywhere). Endless gladiator battles could only take this series so far before it would become boring.

Yea, the season finale aired last week. Although a second season was ordered early on, who knows if it will happen since Andy Whitfield (aka Spartacus) is currently being treated for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

I heard they were doing a 6 ep prequel series while waiting for the actor to come back.

And yeah, from other sources I've heard just about the same stuff. Trashy as hell, not trying to be as artsy as Rome, but a fun, guilty pleasure nonetheless. It's on my to watch list.

The whole time I was watching it I thought "I bet Avery would really dig this show".
