Hobbit 3 Talk

Its hilarious to read online a lot of the moaning about The Hobbit and how a small book became 3 long movies, its like they talk about it as though Peter Jackson was there fannying about doing it just for the love of it. Erm, I'm guessing the movie studios decided to cash in on LotR by making another trilogy which I guess worked cos I imagine Hobbit made a gazillion dollars. So no, PJ did not "fail" or "lose the plot", he did what he was asked. Milk a franchise for a fuckton of money. What were people expecting. The End.

definitely, but *after* the fact, it's naive to think that somehow he "failed", since the number of zeroes now padding the bank accounts of the people in charge of it say otherwise. I'm sure Jackson will get over it once he's sat in his trunks in the cayman islands getting blown by hookers. It certainly makes me feel better every time i lose an argument here. Though its a lot colder here and I pay the missus a lot less

I saw this on NYE. I'd enjoyed the last two enough. This was probably my least favourite of the series, i don't hate it, but found myself checking the time quite often despite it not being that long. I don't really object the changes in plot or feel betrayed or anything, i just didn't find it as entertaining as i hoped. I spent a remarkably long time wondering whether they were going to cut Bjorn, who for some weird reason is one of my childhood memories of reading the book.

things i liked; Billy Connolly, some of the fight choreography, dwarfs chearing the arrival of more dwarfs, Richard Armitage (forget his dorf name) rejecting negotiations, Martin Freeman, the first 20mins or so of battle stuff (then i got a bit tired)

things that could have been better;

The ecstasy of gold with Richard Armitage could have been given a bit more screen. They could have gone full Sierra Madre with him. In general i felt there was an excelent opportunity to make a really big deal out of the greed of various characters. it was in there but didn't really impact me.

Bilbo, he is the most interesting character, i thought he could have been used a bit more. Too much Legolas's face (by far the most uninteresting character in the 6 films), they could have cut him to a cameo and given me a lot more Martin Freeman.

Build up for the scene where the big guns show up to save Gandalf was completely missing. I didn't mind the inclusion of this part of the story, it just sort of felt dropped in really jarringly. If you were not already very familiar with the Lotr it would be even weirder i guess, which i strange for a scene explicitly to point toward the later story.


Also, why the Dune worms? SHI HALUD!

Those things have nothing on dune worms. One thumper placed in the middle of minas tirith and the dark lord would have won the day by daybreak

I assume that you are a huge fan of the Twilight movie franchise. Combined worldwide box office for those movies is close to one billion dollars.

I have always fucking detested this idiotic argument. "Because this one terrible thing made a bunch of money, you may no longer use monetary returns as any sort of argument of quality or popularity, ever."

It's the exact same thing when someone mentions a game is selling well so it's probably good, and someone replies, "Hu hu, Monopoly." Brilliant.

Actually, you know, I take that back about the "terrible thing"--Twilight was not aimed at thirtysomething male geeks. I know it chaps the ass of male geeks around the world when a thing is not aimed at them and yet it does well, but y'know, that's how it is. At any rate, the Twilight series was aimed at teenage girls, they loved it, and it was rewarded with their cash.


Anyway. Back to lurking.

It's also possible, whether or not you accept it, that these films are well done and people with every bit of the intelligence and critical faculties you guys have enjoy them because they are well done. But just not for you.

I can accept that GoT is well done, I just think it pales in comparison to the Hobbit and that is a valid and, you'll have to trust me on this part, well thought out opinion. Maybe you guys can muster up enough respect for our opinions to accept that maybe you just don't like them and that doesn't change the fact that they're well done?

I dunno, Ive not watched them and dont plan to, but if I had made them I'm sure I'd not be worrying too much about whether it was shit or not as I sipped White Russians out of the navels of 1970s Lynda Carter lookalikes on my luxury yacht moored out by the Cayman Islands. And I certainly wouldn't be logging in to check up on the opinions of nerds on internet forums as my viagra-cocaine tab slowly dissolved in my ringpiece just to keep me fizzing for the champagne lunch I'd be having shortly.

Finally got around to seeing this... It was okay, but when did Dwarfs gain the ability to cast summon War Goat.

Really whole battle going on, we see the dwarf army arrive. Only the cousin guy is riding an animal and that animal is a pig. No goats. But when our heroes need to get to the mountain top to fight the super-orc, there are goats just hanging out on the battle field.

I don't know why this bothers me, but it really does.

Love the pun, Attrition. To Edulis' point I noticed the same thing and chalked it up to a scene introducing the rams hit the cutting room floor. Perhaps we'll get the explanation in the extended cut along with some more Beorn and giant eagle ass kicking. I wish they had cut back on Alfred time and given us more focus on the actual Battle of the Five Armies.

My kids and I just laughed and laughed and laughed at that scene. The movie establishes that Thandruil is riding a gigantic war-moose. Okay, fine. And Dain Ironfoot has a war-pig. Sure.

But who left those four war-goats parked there?? Just hilarious.

When you notice stupid continuity errors like that, then you know the movie has not succeeded in pulling you into its world.
