Man, with all the love Iron Giant is getting in this forum I need to watch it. My former stepson used to watch it in the living room, but I never paid all that much attention to it. I know its considered a classic but there are a lot of classic movies I just haven't made time for. Stuff like the Godfather movies, Blade Runner and many more have just escaped me. I should correct that.
Barney, I think you need to fix your post. Surely you meant to put Toy Story 3, not just Toy Story, right? I mean, Toy Story 3 is one of the best family films ever made. The first one is good but not that good.
Iron Giant. God damn that movie. Mainly because I've seen it like 40 times in the first five years of my son's life. We actually "lost" the DVD some time ago but he found it last week and it's been on twice since then. As a matter of fact, I have an Iron Giant action figure in my pocket literally RIGHT NOW because he left it in the car this morning.
It's really good, for the most part. There's some really great stuff in it. But there are a lot of things I don't like about it at all. That scene with the squirrel in the diner, GOD I HATE THAT. It's annoying, and the music cue is AWFUL. You can practically see the sound engineering turning up the volume. There's some really dopey "adult" crap in it too, small town waitress meets beatnik artist to replace kid's absent father, etc...eye-rolling stuff. The Giant is great, the 1950s-era big monster versus army stuff is fun...but by and large I actually think I like Big Hero 6 more than it at this point.
But every nerd sheds a single tear when he says "Superman", so I guess that elevates its stature.
