Big Trouble in Little China remake.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to star.

I'm actually okay with The Rock in it, but of course I think a remake is pointless and won't bother ever watching it.

I might be able to stand the thought of it if they get Kurt Russell back and make this a sequel, not a remake.

I smell what The Rock is cooking, but please make this a sequel or story with some of the same mythology.

I've survived all my other favorites getting pointless remakes and this will be no different. The worst was that horrible Evil Dead remake from a few years ago. Talk about a film completely missing the point.

If this remake happens there is no way this will capture the magic of the Carpenter film. They'd be better off trying to make it it's own shitty thing instead. Hopefully, they toss Carpenter some sort of bullshit executive producer title so he can make a little money on this.

You'd figure by now that Hollywood would have realized that remakes almost never work. Given the success of Fury Road....give Carpenter 100 million, cast Kurt Russell and tell him to go to town. As long as Carpenter writes it, scores, directs it, jerks off to it, and does whatever the hell else he normally does...I'd be in.

Carpenter has no involvement with this remake, so I expect that the studio will fuck it up. For starters, the Jack Burton character will end up being a more conventional hero, and much more competent. Much of the humor and creativity will be lost, and replaced with grim ultra-violence and stupid quantities of shaky cam and CGI.

That said, it's worth remembering that sometimes a remake can actually be better than the original. One of Carpenter's best movies was a re-make that happened to hew more closely to the original story than the first movie could manage.

And just a random fun fact for John Carpenter fans: The Ghosts of Mars was originally titled Escape from Mars. It was going to be the third Snake Plissken movie, but the studio was disappointed by the lousy box office on Escape from L.A. So changes were made, and Snake was replaced by Desolation Williams, played by Ice Cube. Carpenter didn't make another movie for nearly a decade after that.

Whatever happened to 'inspired by'? Remakes are difficult because normally a river can't rise above it's source.

Star Wars inspired by Flash Gordon or Indiana Jones inspired by things like The Naked Jungle or The Secret of the Inca's, or Firefly being inspired by Star Wars (Han Solo more specifically) ... that's what should happen. This remake thing is shit.

Besides the odds of a remake working out being fairly low, I'm definitely skeptical here.

I like the Rock fine, but not sure this is the right vehicle for him. I mean, sure, Kurt had some muscles, but he still kind of had that 'everyman' look. So, you could buy him being in over his head.

I'm not sure the man mountain known as The Rock is going to be able to sell me on that same vibe. Plus, I seriously doubt they frame the film where he's the sidekick like the original did. I guess it's possible though.

(Didn't know that about Ghost of Mars. I'll need to watch it now.)

Well, it looks like he wants to get Carpenter and/or Russell involved:

I agree with quozl, a sequel is the way to go, not a remake. This will ruin one of my favorite movies of all time.
I would almost pay to have them NOT make it on a Kickstarter.
