Yeah, you should probably keep in mind that there is zero chance of me watching a cartoon unless it is on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

I'm certainly not going out of my way to find obscure cartoons and I don't torrent before you ask.

Yeah, JJ you're probably right the Batman cartoon is just cringe worthy. You'll have a better chance of getting me to watch gay porn. Nothing I have seen on animated stuff is worth my time to watch so far.

Isn't there anything in the animated genre that is thought provoking, you know, like Sandman in the comic book field or The Invisibles or is it all for kids?

Home Movies is so great. I need to watch my two favourite episodes again badly, when Brandon directs the school play ("hey Melissa, how about you sing-talk?") and when Coach McGurk tries to become a bartender, "how about a red/white wine mix?"

For you poor bastards that haven't been exposed to the genius of Home Movies, here's a part of my favourite episode, Bye Bye Greasy. Watch it from 3:12 to 5:20. Brandon Small is putting on the school play and Coach McGurk is driving on stage for the climax of the play but he can't get his window down for his musical number. I couldn't stop laughing the first time I saw it.

and here's the one where Coach McGurk goes to bartending school. It's awesome. Watch from 1:33 to 4:56. I was crying at work laughing so hard. Must have been an onion somewhere on my desk.

Home Movies is amazing. I also have a soft spot for Aeon Flux, both the shorts from Liquid Television and the series. Sealab 2021 is fun, too (Captain Murphy!), but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it probably fails your "too silly" test.

Here is a shot film about an elderly women's orgasms. The previous one I posted, Anijam (which is NOT for kids although it is partly for older kids) is the prequel to this one...in a way.

This one is different animators, using the same soundtrack, making separate films all about this elderly woman and her orgasms. It's serious I guess but I'd start with the previous one I posted first. Which has incredible animation and can be viewed in it's entirety right here in this forum. So you won't need anything else for those two recommendations. If you can't see the art in the drawings of these two I'm not sure what else I can offer.

As a series? No, not really. You'd be most likely to find something serious and thought-provoking in anime. Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of two anime series I can look back on my anime watching time and honestly say I enjoyed. There's a lot in there about the nature of humanity and god, but there's still your basic anime silly tropes, a bit of the pervy and plenty of teen angst.

The Maxx was pretty thought provoking with issues of what is real, mental illness and homelessness. But yeah I have no idea if it's available to stream anywhere or not.

Pretty much all animated series that are targeted at adults are comedies and by their very nature will be a bit childish and sophomoric. You are right though, there really isn't anything animated that kind of fills that same space in the way Vertigo and small publishers do in the world of comics. I think it would be a tough sell to audiences and animated series are more expensive to produce than many people realize so studios might not want to take the risk. For the longest times cartoons were just for kids, but now that audiences are used to adult humor in their cartoons maybe it's time to move on to other adult themes.

Now if we're talking about animated films for adults, there are plenty of those. Waltz for Bashir being the first that comes to mind.

I'll second the Space Ghost Coast to coast recommendation.

I love Home Movies - Pretty much every scene with McGurk rules.

I love this one with Mitch Hedburg as the anger management facilitator :

- I'm going to start using that chicken wing thing to change the subject in uncomfortable conversations at work. Seems golden.
