2015 Oscar Nominations

TEN nominations for Mad Max!!! Talk about Oscar getting it right, that's so awesome. I never thought it would get this kind of high-brow recognition. I'm so happy. George Miller nominated for best director too!

Jennifer Lawrence gets another nomination. Martian gets nominated for Best Picture and, more surprisingly, Matt Damon gets a best actor nomination. I'm surprised to see Damon nominated over Ridley Scott on that one. I think that movie is good because of the directing (and editing) more than the performance(s).

There's only 20 acting nominations so there's not that many to go around. As it happens, all 20 are white so the #OscarsSoWhite is trending again. With Chris Rock hosting, I'm sure this will be a thing.

The guy that directed ROOM got a nomination too, very cool.

I need to see Brooklyn and Spotlight immediately. I need to stop dicking around.

Star Wars didn't really get any major nominations except for Best Score for Williams.

Inside Out got a best screenplay nomination which is HUGE. As did Ex Machina which is super cool. Oscar usually hates sci-fi.

Shaun the Sheep joins Inside Out for nominations for best animated (yay).

...I think that's the only interesting stuff I noticed...

I know most people don't care but with Mad Max getting recognition, I felt this was a good year :)

Hateful Eight got snubbed pretty badly. I hope Morricone wins best score at least... I love that guy.

In any case, after last year it's now obligatory that I post the best ever awards speech in your Oscar thread.

So far, Mad Max is the only best picture nominee I've seen. Weird. I think we'll try to go to The Big Short tonight and try to catch Room (lordy, not The Room) on VOD if it's available; we missed the latter for some reason I can't pin down when it was at our local boutique theater.

I wouldn't be that surprised if Mad Max actually won it. I mean, yeah, a little, but I don't see any shoo-in.

I think the Revenant is the shoe-in for Best Picture.

I have no interest in seeing ROOM--on a no-kids-in-danger kick for the last few years now. The big news for me is Inñaritu getting a nod, and maybe even leading for Best Director--if he wins, that's back-to-back and that is Just Not Done®.

My friend is going to send a SPOTLIGHT screener over, so I'll catch that (kids in danger, I know). I missed BROOKLYN, sadly, but I will catch THE REVENANT at some point.

Where the hell is Idris Elba? Guy can't catch a break.

Spotlight is the shoo-in for Best Picture. Not only does it glorify media (and a dying media at that), but it also has a Righteous Cause. Oscar loves both of those things.

I don't think there is a shoo-in (shoe-in?) this year. The only two that have any chance of winning are Spotlight and The Revenant. Spotlight was likely win it.

So yeah, it'll be Spotlight and Hillary Clinton.

Further predictions:
BP - Spotlight (as stated above)
Dir. - Miller (Oscar loves comebacks)
Actor - DiCaprio (He's overdue)
Actress - Blanchett (all others seem like graceful nods)
Supp. Actor - Ruffalo (this one's tough)
Supp. Actress - Mara (another tough one)
Animated - Inside Out (would love for it to be Anomalisa, but I'm not stupid)
Doc - Amy (although I'm rooting for Look of Silence)
Foreign - Son of Saul (Holocaust)
Adapt. Screenplay - The Martian (up in the air, but Martian is safest bet)
Orig. Screenplay - Spotlight (I need to research the writers for more confidence)

okok, let's predict, that's always fun

BP - Spotlight
Dir. - Inarritu (Miller has almost no chance of winning this).
Actor - Dicaprio (this is his year for sure but mostly because there is ZERO competition for it)
Actress - Brie Larson for ROOM (Greg is nuts to think Cate can take this, only Saoirse has a shot and even then that's a long shot. Plus did you see Room?? It's nuts)
Supp. Actor - This one is impossible to predict between Stallone and Rylance but I think Stallone takes it.
Supp. Actress - Agree with Greg on Mara, disagree with Greg that this one is tough.

I don't know how you can pick the other ones. THey're so hard to predict.
I really hope AMY wins best doc. That movie was insane.
Animated I'd be happy with Inside Out or Shaun the Sheep
That Son of Saul movie looks sooooo boring. i saw a preview last night.

It's "shoo-," like waving someone in.

"From a sense of the verb shoo, where racehorses would fall back and allow a chosen rider to win a fixed race." -- Wiktionary.

I don't see Furiosa getting an acting nomination there. The only one I think that could pull of a supporting nomination is Nicolas H as that warboy.

These kinds of movies don't get acting nods ever anyway.
