Spinning off from the Ghostbusters thread, there's an art to making a great trailer. Let's talk/share our favorites.

This is the first one that came to my mind, certainly my favorite.

The teaser trailer for TOMBSTONE is the best action movie trailer of the last thirty years. SUCKER PUNCH had a great trailer and so did PROMETHEUS, but man, TOMBSTONE's teaser sells this movie in 90 seconds.

TREE OF LIFE gives me chills, but that's probably just Malick:

Where the Wild Things Are trailer made me cry. Wake Up by Arcade Fire was maybe the best song choice for a trailer. I actually liked the movie too.

Not sure how to post video clips.

That trailer is significantly better than the movie. Success.

The two trailers that I can think of that made me go from being very dubious to full on anticipating the release were Fury Road and the second Watchmen trailer (with Muse's Take a Bow), as both brilliantly captured the tone I was looking for in the films:

Say what you will about the movie, but the trailer did its job.

Wow! that Tombstone trailer kicks ass! It's my second favorite Western, but I've never seen that. Thanks, Jeb!

I forgot how great that Watchmen trailer was. I hadn't read the graphic novel before I saw the trailer, and it sold me on it pretty hard.
Have to second the Prometheus trailer, especially the quick cuts with the alien scream. Too bad the movie itself didn't live up to it, but that's why trailer makers get paid the big bucks (I assume).
Also in the vein of "awesome trailer, ehhhhh movie":

Up until that BvS trailer that spoils Doomsday being in the movie, Zack Snyder movies do make petty great trailers. Not a one of them are good movies in even the vaguest sense, but those trailers...

Good thing Peter Jackson didn't direct Where the Wild Things. It would have been a epic 3 movie contract with a weird inter species love triangle.

Where the Wild Thinge Are did have a good trailer. But it turned out to be one of the worst movies ever made. I seriously hate that movie quite possibly as much as anything I've ever seen.

Phantom Menace had an awesome trailer...at least it was when you had no idea how all of that stuff fit together or how plastic the whole thing would be.

There Will Be Blood had a really great one with just DDD's monologues in it.

I was going to mention the trailer for The Phantom Menace. I let that sucker download overnight on my modem so I could watch it. We actually paid to get into Enemy of the State, which had the trailer in front of it, watched the trailer, and then left. We were incredibly stoked for this movie, as it looked like it really captured the look and feel of Star Wars.

I think you all know how that turned out.

The one that always comes to mind for me is the teaser trailer to Strange Days. Very unique and intriguing. I saw it in a set with the much more famous Independence Day teaser, but it was Strange Days that I had to see.

...

Enemy of the State. I wish. I had to pay for fucking Wing Commander to watch the Star Wars trailer.
