I saw it last night. I made it a point to not engage with people online about The Force Awakens, which I adored, and I’m not sure what encouraged me to act differently for this one, but I did and there’s no turning back.
I loved this movie. Like, really really *loved* this movie. And I am really saddened that Internet cynicism is going to destroy it.
-Finn and Rose’s plot is not pointless. It goes on longer than it should, but it’s not pointless. The theme of the entire movie is finding ones place, and Finn’s arc got him there and introduced a fun (maybe not interesting, but fun) character with Rose. The casino scene is my biggest gripe with the whole movie, but that’s more because it takes Star Wars out of the frontier and into civilization, which is always going to look stupid.
-Leia in space is fine. She has the fucking Force, you unimaginative, insufferable peasants. Stop your fucking whining you entitled little pricks. For the last time, FUCKING LASER SWORDS.
-I absolutely LOVED that it laughs in the face of those thinking some bigger mystery had to be in play with who Snoke was and who are Rey’s parents. That over-analytical conspiracy theory bullshit always irritates me and those people deserved to be let down. I keep reading, “Why build Snoke up just to kill him off?” Snoke was not built up. He was evil, we got that, really nothing else to go on. No time developing that character was wasted since no development was made. It’s not his story. Not everything needs a backstory.
-Rey and Kylo fighting the Praetreon guards might be my favorite scene in any SW movie.
-Loved going out on a ground battle.
-Best Luke movie. Hands down.
-Kylo was the most interesting character in TFA and this movie confirmed that.
I probably could say more, but I’ve got shit to do.

I normally rely on film critics to help me screen my movie selections, but I feel like I can't trust them this time around. The high scores at Rotten Tomatoes seem out of step with the mixed reviews I am hearing from people I know. Is it possible that Star Wars carries so much nostalgia that not even film critics can watch it with objectivity?

If your someone who has fallen prey to cynicism that’s so en vogue with today’s internet driven culture, please, stay away from this movie.
Though, I will say this: It’s probably the least nostalgic SW movie. It’s different. More different that Rogue One.

I adore Star Wars. There's a lot to like in TLJ, but I'm not backing down: that Leia scene was lame. I can dance to a Space Opera, but it was an jarring transition & it may have been the worse effect in the film.
Confession; I laughed out loud at most of the jokes. Genuine laughter.
Observation; the sold out 7pm audience was mostly 'eager' for the first 3/5 of the film. The Snope scene had everyone on high alert and cheering.

In a franchise where people can fly through the air, lift heavy objects, communicate with the living after death and, lets not forget, become pregnant all due to an all-powerful mystical energy, using it to travel through space is pretty low on the suspension of disbelief scale.

I also loved the Yoda scene. It could have felt like a pointless referential guest appearance like we see on the new Star Trek, but that wasn’t the case. Even Luke has to find his place in the universe as it is, and really, who better. And he looked great. Glad they got Frank Oz back, he hasn’t voiced the character for some time.

I really hate the humor in this movie. In the beginning, Poe is talking to Hux. Hux has this great over the top bad guy line and it gets turned into a shitty joke. Repeat two more times.

I thought that was great, and funny for being different/unexpected. I would have liked to see them play more on making fun of Hux throughout. There are a couple of small moments later where his interactions with Kylo are amusing.
But... the humor in this does feel a little more "Marvel-y." Still funny. But it's another area where I think Force Awakens was a little bit better.

Saw it today and definitely enjoyed it. I could easily criti-nitpick this movie to death because its not what I would have done. I'm not going to though.

I can imagine the bitching about the Leia space scene. Except that it ties into a major part of the movie. The jedi, including untrained Leia, are fucking LEGENDS and do LEGENDARY SHIT that gets told as stories and inspires people for generations. Notice how they made a point to show Poe and others watching every major force event? Leia's space walk, Luke's final battle, Rey lifting the rocks. The jedi are no longer the myth they were in Force Awakens after this movie. They're back.

I agree with 95% of what Josh said in his posts. It’s a very good movie. It played it safe with keeping to the Empire Strikes Back plotlines. But since Empire Strikes Back was the best Star Wars movie why not keep to that formula.
