Wife and kids are out of town for a few days. Think I'm going to get wild and watch a movie while I model.

Here's a list of potential candidates:

Bright
Mute
Jupiter Ascending
Valerian
Atomic Blonde

Only one I've seen is Jupiter Ascending. Not a very good film but I give it respect for trying something new. In a day and age where every movie is a sequel or a remake, it took some sand to make a movie from an original idea. Mila Kunis is super hot but it's not enough to make the movie "good"

Hmmm...wasn't there also some Vin Diesel cyberpunk flick within the past 10 years? I think it got panned, but what was it called? Should I consider adding it to the list? Also, a third Pitch Black?

Ouf, slim pickings..
1. Atomic Blonde - this is the only good movie here. Plus it’s got a great lesbian scene at the 51 minute mark or so. Can’t miss!

2. Valerian - based solely on the recent favourable review written here. I still don’t think it’ll be good but it’s coming from a John Carter enthusiast so it’s right up your alley, White!

Now, onto the trash tier...
3. Bright
4. Jupiter Ascending
5. Mute (this looks sooooo bad)

I've only seen Bright, and it wasn't great but it was fun and took itself just serious enough to build an interesting world.

Mute was average. I will concur that your list of choices should probably be set on fire.

Valerian was interesting looking nothing. And I enjoy the comics it was based on.

Valerian and Jupiter Ascending are worth watching. Both are auteurist messes, but from great auteurs.

Mute is fucking HORRIBLE. It’s like a bad student film. Between it and Warcraft, Duncan Jones has blown it.

Bright is bad but at least it’s unique.

If you haven’t seen Riddick, you should. It’s total trash but in a good way, like the other two. It is basically a Conan-style pulp story in space.

That's the second Pitch Black film, right? I saw the first two. Not the third.

All three of them were awesome, trashy, extravagant doses of space opera.

None of these movies are very good. Valerian is stunningly beautiful but the two leads can’t act their way out of a paper bag.

Atomic Blonde is okay.

The other three are hot garbage, especially Bright.

The third Riddick alright. Michael said it best, it’s trash but it’s fun enough.

There’s also an independent sci-fi flick out of Australia on Hulu called The Osiris Child that I watched a couple weeks ago. It’s far from perfect, and its non-linear storytelling will leave you wondering where it’s going in the middle, but I had a good time watching it. It is ambitious beyond its means and does not let its lack of budget deter it from what it hopes to achieve, and its really hard to not be charmed by that. I imagine that same spirit was present in the older Mad Max films. The actors all seem pretty into being there which really helps sell what should be nothing more than pure cheese. It’s also has creatures made with practical effects, so bonus points for that. Don’t go in expecting something great and you’ll have a fun, if bumpy, pulp sci-fi ride. This kind of movie is an endangered species and I can’t help but overlook its flaws for what it does right.

They all seem very rank, but I have seen none of them. The trailers at least have me interested in eventually seeing Atomic Blonde, Valerian, and Jupiter Ascending.
