I'm a diehard fan of the REH stories, as well as the old Savage Sword magazines and Roy Thomas comics. Last year, a friend who owns one of the local stores ( Vault of Midnight in Ann Arbor) turned me on to Dark Horse's new versions that they're doing in REH/de Camp/Carter chronology with new material to fill in the gaps. They started with the redoubtable Kurt Busiek (of Astro City fame) and continued with Tim Truman (whom the old guard among us remember from Grimjack, among many, many other things) and now Roy Thomas as writers. The artists have all been solid, as well. I've been picking them up in collected form, so you get a complete story arc for like $20US.

Here's the Wikipedia entry , which gives a good rundown on the whole venture.

If anyone is interested in these, I have the first 70 or 80 issues and I would part with them pretty cheap. It would definitely save you some money over the trade paperbacks. TM me if you have any interest.

Like Scout! The new Conan boks are way better than I thought they would be; certainly worth a look for any fan.

Yeah, that's the way Curtis at Vault sold me on the idea. I was like "Conan? Again? Dude, I still have a lot of my old Savage Swords (which DH is also reprinting, for those who don't know.) Why would I want another reprint?"

He was all: "First off, it's not just a reprint, because there are new stories joining the REH stuff together, as well as a whole new origin arc ("Born on the Battlefield"; collection #0.) Secondly, excellent 70s-style fantasy art. Thirdly, Kurt Busiek."

They've been great. I've actually been excited to read the new versions of REH stores that I've read a a half-dozen times or more.

The Busiek/Nord run was amazing. Truman, not so much.

The trades seem to go for like $10 a pop being that they are that sweet spot of old but not so old they are hard to find.

I stopped buying them just a handfull of issues after Busiek left. His run with Nord was brilliant and I'm happy I got to meet Nord mid run to draw that awesome avatar I have. I did stick around to get the Mignola run (all three issues) because his art style is awesome for the series. Unfortunately the Truman run is just ok and not really worth picking up, which is why I stopped buying the series. A friend of mine still follows it and I borrow them from him. They're still fun, I mean it's Conan, but after the crazy highs Busiek and team reached it was hard to follow with anything but dissapointment.

I still pick up the new trades, but yeah, I agree, the new ones aren't as excellent as the first 4-5 collections (up 'til Rogues in the House I'd say). They're still following the "canon" timeline and when they get to an actuel REH story things do pick up though.

Just got that Scarlet Citadel one, haven't read it yet though.
