One look at that and it is *incredibly* clear that he is the King That is easily the most stunning/overwhelming collection of Kirby art in one page I've ever seen.

That one with Etrigan and Gargora is just mind-blowing. The simple narrative of that Thor page is practically elemental in its clarity. NO ONE has ever captured Galactus' cold, callow visage better. The geometry of costume, the framing, the sheer overblown, excited exuberance of the comics form...he's the king, what more is there to say?
Last year, at the Dragon Con art show (which is a total fucking travesty of the word "art), there was a little exhibit where there was some original comics art. They had a couple of panels of original Kirby pencils. No one was looking at them. Everyone was looking at fan art of Jean-Luc Picard and photoshop kitten dragons. I stared at them for like 15 minutes.

Really? I think it's pretty hard to look at that link and go "eh". I've got a shelf full of Kirby comics, and I *still* actually have more appreciation for Kirby now than I did before seeing that collection of art there. It's untouchable from just about any angle: whether looking for mega-intense superhero art, beautiful abstract designs, or even fine and detailed rendering (not something I previously associated with Kirby), he's got something for everyone. I always say that Kirby is an acquired taste, but I think if you can't acquire that taste from being blown away from at least *something* on that page, you're hopeless. It's got the Devil Dinosaur splash page that convinced Will Eisner, too (Will Eisner had always thought of Kirby as a good but merely working-for-pay, commercial artist; supposedly that Devil Dinosaur page with the crazy giant cosmic dinosaur thing convinced Eisner that he was an Artist. I think it's even one of the weaker, sillier pieces on that page)ldsdbomber wrote: er, OK guys, whatever you say.

Kirby added sci-fi elements to even the mythological characters like the Asgardians and Olympians which gave the characters a futuristic sensibility. And the clothes!!!! (I want Odin's sweet fur coat that he rocks in an early Thor comic from the 60's)
