Since 1910, 510 Franklin Avenue (otherwise known as the Doubleday Building) has sold and distributed books of some sort. Thursday, Jan. 31st was the last day for what was left of Doubleday (Now called Direct Brands).

Everyone who is still with the current company is moving to One Penn Plaza (Madison Square Garden). This sucks for my wife, who hates transit travel and crowds but loves books.

End of an era for sure Dave. It's tough to see legendary institutions like this winking out with hardly anyone noticing. Thanks for pointing it out.

I never would've heard about this company downsizing like this, when they've printed Keats, Burroughs, Poe...countless legendary writers who shaped the thinking of the 20th century.

Here's what's messed up: When the Twinkie died, there were damned near riots.

From Keats to Danielle Steele. The last book out of the Doubleday building was Danielle Steele's "Until the End of Time." Ther staff placed a copy in an air vent of the building as part of a time capsule.

As far as popular culture, the new head honchos (Old Lehmann Bros guys) don't givce a crap about that. the first day in the new office will comprise of bleary eyed Super Bowl viewers from the previous night.

On a (somewhat) related note, I just took some pictures using 35mm black & white film, only to find there is no longer any place near me that will develop them. From books to pictures to music I am constantly disappointed by our cultures tendency to prefer convenience over quality.

Al, go see my friend Chris down at Photosynthesis in Manchester. He's all about retro photography. 35mm is new fangled by his standards. He'll develop those pictures for you.

Used to develop 35mm black and white film as a kid in the bathroom. Printing was a different score although Grandad had an enlarger and a darkroom.

Used to buy the chemicals from a local pharmacist (chemist in UK speak). I think, these days, I'd be arrested as a terrorist if I went to buy so many chemicals at the one time.
