Looks like he had the mind mapping thing going on decades before it became a thing. At one point in my life, my desk used to look like his notes. I swore I could find whatever I was looking for despite the apparent disorganization.

I'm a diferent (and more organized) person now but appreciate the non linear thinking of a creative genius. For me it's not so much creepy as it is inspirational. You're looking at him "think" on paper.

Awesome stuff.

On the following, unshown page- "black people=bad".

That is pretty cool, definitely how we usually picture the Elder Things.

When I was still in school I usually kept a large sheet of paper on my desk (at home) and scribbled various things on it and drawings, to keep myself from doing homework. I exchanged those sheets about yearly when there really wasn't any place left on them. I have several of them now, which look even crazier than Lovecraft's, ripe with numbers and formulas (from maths homework), comic figures (Eugene is actually adopted from a caricature of teacher I used to draw), small poems (usually four liners) and more...

That's cool. Better than a diary. I'm surprised you kept it Schweig. Stuff like that usually never survives.

One lesson that I have learned from this:

If you want to appear crazy, ensure that you are so broke that you must conserve paper rigorously. Write notes on old, used envelopes, and fill all the available space.

Still, those drawings are disturbing. Turns out he always knew exactly what the Old Ones looked like. The Weird Tales illustrators didn't contribute as much visual imagination as I had assumed.

CORRECTION: It was ASTOUNDING STORIES, not WEIRD TALES. I looked it up just now. Here's a link to the illustrations from the original publication:

At the Mountains of Madness in Astounding Stories

He did love eyeballs...and tentacles. They have their EYE(s)...on you.

Wow, the level of detail in that sketch was unexpected. I had no idea he'd specified the colors (though he might have mentioned them in the novella, it's been a while since I've read it) or some of the dimensions.

I love it whenever he incorporates science-fiction elements into his stories like the "neither plant nor animal bit," or the whole sequence in The Colour Out of Space when the scientists attempt to analyze material recovered from the blasted heath.
