I love Calvin and Hobbes, always have. It's on a very short list of the best comics ever printed that includes things like, Krazy Kat, Pogo, everything that B Kliban did and a few others. I've also always admired him for sticking to his guns. Refusing to do a Spielberg movie, never giving into any kind of marketing, shunning all publicity and retiring the comic before it got too repetitive. He was way ahead (or just outside of) his time and the hard cover collection of all his works sits proudly on my shelf in plain view (it also helped me kill a mouse once - to my great shame). I know a new doc about him is coming out but I've yet to hear any word as to whether or not he will make an appearance. I kind of hope he doesn't.

This here is a recent interview... yes, recent.

I would prefer if he doesn't, though I am a huge C+H fan. I sincerely doubt he will!

You check out the interview? Some great lines in there like this one:

Q - "Owing to spite or just a foul mood, have you ever peeled one of those stupid Calvin stickers off of a pickup truck?"

A - "I figure that, long after the strip is forgotten, those decals are my ticket to immortality."

He hasn't changed but he seems to have a good sense of humour about it all.

Dressing up my 1-1/2 old up as Calvin for Halloween this year. He's got a stuffed tiger that looks a lot like Hobbes (in stuffed form of course).

Yeah, sadly, I don't think he was "ahead of his time" at all, but rather way way behind his time, a throwback to the days when beautiful drawing in comic strips mattered. The dude really knows his comic-strip history, too. I can't wait for my son to be old enough to enjoy it.

If you like C&H, you should really check out the new Crockett Johnson Barnaby collection. It has many similarities to Calvin & Hobbes (though I think Watterson claims that he surprisingly wasn't influenced by it at all), and also like Calvin & Hobbes it burned short and sweet; I think the plan is for the complete Barnaby to be 5 volumes, and only the first two and the tail-end of the fifth are by Crockett Johnson. I find that even friends who aren't into old comic strips are really digging that Barnaby, even despite its unappealing appearance.

PS: He is not in the new documentary. At least, they list a LOT of interviewees, and do not mention him as one of them.

Thanks for that recommendation, I'll definitely check that out.

He is, in many ways, behind his time, I get that. At least as a technician but I think that conceptually there are some things that were ahead of their time. I'm thinking specifically of things like Tracer Bullet or a T-Rex flying an F-16. That kind of cross genre surrealism was not common at the time and sure is now and Tracer Bullet certainly seems like it might have had a big influence on Mike Mignola and Frank Miller for example. But there is a really old fashioned feeling to his cartoons and there is something incredibly nostalgic about them.

There's a Calvin & Hobbes documentary coming out? I haven't heard anything about it. What's it called?

Dear Mr. Watterson, here's the trailer.

I was actually more excited about the interview I posted with him even though there's no video of him and it's just a few questions. He's only done like three interviews his whole career and is private to the extreme. I'll watch the doc too though.

When asked if Hobbes is real or not, if he says Calvin has schizophrenia, it's going to ruin everything.

When I was a kid, I really wanted to be a cartoonist. I wrote him a letter asking all sorts of questions, and a few weeks later, I got an envelope that had Calvin & Hobbes sitting under a tree on it. He wrote me this very nice, very personal letter and it was very clear that he had actually read my letter.

I still have it. It's one of my most treasured possessions.

I need that stuffed Bill the Cat. I always loved C+H, but Bloom County is my favorite strip ever. C+H is certainly more timeless, though, as BC was often topical. I'll look forward to seeing that documentary... on Netflix, hopefully?

Calvin & Hobbes is still the only comic I can legitimately relate to; it makes me remember what it was like to be a kid without reservation. Nothing else -- literary, musical, graphical, or otherwise -- has achieved that, and for that alone it's one of the greats.
