Regarding getting kids to sleep, I say do whatever causes the least fuss and bother for the family. Don't get hung up on having to have the lights out, or which bed the the kid is sleeping in, or even if they are sleeping in a bed (mine goes still goes through brief periods where she sleeps on the sofa in the family room). I wouldn't worry about his sleeping with you becoming a habit. Kids can go through sudden cognitive growth spurts. This can make them anxious, clingy, have difficulty sleeping, cause vivid dreams/nightmares, and even regress for a couple of weeks, and then BAM they are suddenly functioning on an entirely new level, or have mastered a new skill, and they go back to being their normal independent, fearless selves (and back to sleeping in their own bed, with the lights off and not needing daddy on the floor to get to sleep).
