I hope you don't think I was criticizing. Yes, I was scared from by that Alien experience, but I clearly loved every minute of it. I mean I've told that story for years, that story is over 30 years old now. I tell so much because it was such a memorable experience, in a positive way.

I understand you weren't being critical, I was just clarifying so it was understood that it was more about bonding with my son over watching something we both knew he "shouldn't" be watching rather than an attempt to vicariously revisit my childhood traumas.
@Barney: My objection to the jokes in Predator wasn't the language so much as the fact that I didn't want to have to have a sex talk in the middle of a sci-fi/horror movie. Explaining fantasy violence to a 9 year-old is much easier than trying to explain a dirty joke. He heard all of the swearing in all 3 movies and, while he hears the occasional swear word from his parents, he knows where the lines are.
As for the skinned bodies in Predator, I could tell from his reaction that he was revulsed and fascinated at the same time, much as I was when Ponda Baba had his arm cut off in Star Wars or any of the uber-violent stuff happened in Conan. It wasn't a case where he wanted to freeze frame it and make notes and sketches before he went upstairs to torture the cats.

What's 'fantasy violence' exactly? To me fantasy violence is bloodless and implied. Like one of Daenerys Targaryen's newly hatched dragons burning Pyat Pree and Kraznys mo Nakloz alive. That's fantasy violence. You see a person, then a bunch of fire and maybe some screaming and then no one is there.
Adult males were passing out and vomiting during the first screenings of Alien.
Newt's 9-yr old brother, Timmy, was presumably cocooned just like the rest and could very well have been the kid wearing the running shoe that was juxtiposed from the ceiling. What happened to him? Wait another 15 minutes and we'll show you.
I remember watching Predator with my younger stepbrother and the quick passing shot of Texas who has his torso chunneled totally messed him up. He was a disaster for a week (but he was soft, I have to admit).
I know times are different but is the violence sensitivity of a adult male in the 70s probably nowadays close to a 9-yr old boy in today's society? My little girl is 3 years old and my wife and i often talk about where the limits are and so far, like you, we've mostly been making them on language. Like I can play Call of Duty in front of her as long as I'm not swearing. Nevermind that I'm cutting through digital men and women (who look real enough) like I was cutting through cake. As long as I'm not swearing. No Howard Stern either.
I'm not judging, I'm actually interesting in talking about it and you've gone ahead and made decisions which interest me. That's where I'm coming from, Seb. So don't think I'm attacking or anything, I'm actually really interested.
I wanted my dad to come upstairs and bring me down to watch The Howling with him and his friends drinking beer SO BADLY. Would it have been so bad? I have NO IDEA.

I have low self-esteem, I desperately crave validation, and secretly yearn for Thank Yous. (The site does handle them crappily, in my opinion. I always use CTRL-clicks to "open them in a new tab" to not disturb my current reading.)
That ctrl-click suggestion is a great idea. Of course, you just revealed yourself as an armchair socialist mac user.

My wife and I have been pretty strict with what we let our kids watch and we've been really surprised at how commonplace swearing was in the "family" movies we watched when we were kids. I have revisited quite a few childhood favourites and determined them unsuitable for my kids at this point, e.g. The Goonies. Maybe when they're a bit older. We're probably being a bit precious but it seems to me that family movies made today are a lot more careful about swearing and sexual innuendo.
Also, I'm a fullstop and two spaces kind of guy.

My parents took us to see Jaws at a drive-in when I was about 8. I *still* have a totally irrational fear of swimming when I can't see what's underneath me, even in a swimming pool.
As far as F:AT confessions, I love this site and identify more here than other places, though I've never really felt like I'm "part of" in the way that I've been on some other sites and forums. For some reason, I don't feel as free to joke around here and be myself, which is weird because it's definitely more of that kind of atmosphere. I just seem more utilitarian here, and probably come off kind of lame when I post something a lot of times, because there's not any wit or character there.
It may be that while I'm very much into F:AT culture and gaming stuff, I don't feel as connected in some respects because a lot of you guys are partiers and such, and I'm more laid back in that respect (a recovering addict children's entertainer Mormon is probably not the face of F:AT, ya know?). It's sort of like, because I couldn't really hang out with some of you at a convention when you want to go out drinking (just not safe for me to do), I project that a little bit into my relationship here on the boards, and that makes me more tentative or whatever. Whereas on BGG and other sites, it's a much bigger melting pot and I'm more comfortable being me, if that makes any sense.
Eh, that's just a fleeting thing I feel once in a great while, and it's probably not very well founded, anyway. I've never felt that I don't belong here... we're all a weird group of misfits, anyway... but more that I haven't really integrated personally as well as I could/should have. Everybody's been cool and friendly, though, especially Barney (if there is a face of F:AT, I picture it as a blend of Mark E. Smith and Richard Simmons), and I've had a good time meeting up with a few of you at the FFG Center and at Gamestorm, and still hope to get to Atlanta in my travels sometime.

Besides that, owing to a fairly conservative upbringing and living overseas, my engagement with most music and film has been almost entirely beginning in 2001, especially music. My entire world was Christian music until I started college. I feel way out of my depth in the "What MUSIC" thread as a result.
Having said that, I know that the userbase is a lot less homogenous than it sometimes feels.

Hey, if we ever end up in the same city at one point, let's go for a coffee/latte or something for crying out loud. That's what I like to do with people I enjoy conversing with. I go drinking with people where alcohol makes them more interesting or maybe even remotely funny (read: people from work). I won't need alcohol to enjoy talking to you about deep water fear. Notice that we both specifically only fear the water when we can't see the bottom. It's the exact same thing for me.
Death & Taxis, that would have been even better if your mom told you a few years later that lots of the people in that film died. What a weird coincidence. Anyways, night-night sweetie.
