Sad news. They are supposed to shut down within a year. I guess Miyazaki's retirement and no real hits for several years has taken its toll. Honestly I haven't been a fan of anything they've done since 2001's Spirited Away, but it still sucks.

Bummer. Spirited Away is fantastic. I also enjoyed Howl's Moving Castle.

Not dead yet. Looks like the translation is better understood as taking a break and reorganizing. A commenter pointed out Disney went through the same thing right before The Jungle Book became a huge hit.

The first time Miyazaki announced his retirement was in 1997, he said Princess Mononoke was his last film.

But this is likely it, and undoubtedly Ghibli is looking at what to do from here...succession issues, what to do to maintain the brand, and so forth. They can carry on, but I think it will be definitely a period like Disney had after Walt passed away. It remains to be seen if Goro can carry on his dad's legacy.

From what I hear, he wants to just do manga from here on out.

Oh man, with 4 arms he will be able to crank out a lot of manga.

I worry about Goro. His only two films, Earthsea and Poppy Hill, were both pretty mediocre. I am certain with some help he could be great, but he has huge shoes to fill.

I blame Ponyo's cunt mom. I know the balance of nature was upset by one studio putting out so many truly remarkable films while so many others put out utter garbage.

Fucking bitch.
