This episode we have an hour long conversation with Peter-freakin-Olotka, the co-designer of Cosmic Encounter! The stories about the development of CE, their efforts to publish it with Parker Bros, how Dune came to be, and more, are really fascinating.
Plus I goaded him into trash-talking Coup for ripping off Hoax. So there's that.
On iTunes or over at ludology.net.

I enjoyed hearing the stories around the games' origins but missed the usual insight we get from the show. It's good to keep it mix it up I suppose.engelstein wrote: I normally refrain from shilling Ludology here (he said casually, after shilling the last Ludology as well), but...

I found the stuff about Darkover, a title I had not heard of, and about sharp edges in design, the most interesting parts so thanks for that.
That sheds a different light on it as just listening to the show he sounded bitter, if couched in humor, about the financial outcomes for their designs and about Hoax/Coup. I guess you had chatted about it before the recording and knew you'd get that reaction.Plus I goaded him into trash-talking Coup for ripping off Hoax. So there's that.

From a quick glance at the rules you take a fantasy dudes on a map game with rock paper scissors combat and then layer on a variety of spells, actions and roles. For example whoever is the monitor can dish out punishment to a player who shows anger, greed or despair. The regent can demand tribute from others. A certain type of tie during RPS results in a staring (and chanting) contest. First to crack loses. There are also dares that the players write down and may have to complete or face certain in game consequences. You get the picture, a weird hodge-podge of strategy and party game mechanisms.
