“They carried all they could bear, and then some, including a silent awe for the terrible power of the things they carried.”
― Tim O'Brien, The Things They Carried
So what are five things you've bought that you use all the time and are essential to your life?
I ask because I moved to the Middle East two years ago, and got rid of a lot of stuff. Now I'm moving back to the U.S. and getting rid of most of what I brought here, and realizing most of the crap I buy feels important but isn't.

My skillet for cooking.
My smartphone for commuting.
My safety razor for shaving.
My computer for remote working.
My vaporizer for vaping.
I may be stretching the word "essential" as obviously I wouldn't drop dead without these things.

My essentials:
There's other stuff I like, but these are the material items that make life better and whose absence I feel.
- A laptop. I normally use a Macbook, but have been using a Lenovo T430 for two years, so at this point I'm platform agnostic as long as it has a really good screen and keyboard, and a terabyte of storage.
- a decent recumbent bike. Yes, they're ridiculous, but no pain after long rides.
- Smart phone. I buy Chinese because they only have a 2 percent profit margin.
- My Panasonic GX1 camera and lenses
- Leatherman micra or other multitool. At the very least I carry a retractable X-acto.
- I like books a lot
- Keen sandals or Birkenstocks. They seem to keep my back happy

eyeglasses
house
car
computer
cellphone
The function that these items serve is essential: shelter, transportation, communication, etc. But the specific items are not so crucial. Five years ago, I had different glasses, an apartment instead of a house, an older car, and a different cellphone. Same functions, different specific items that serve the function.
That said, I have been using the same Trac II razor blade handle since 1980. It's practically like an extension of my hand now due to familiarity.
