Ask them if they are short, and exactly what they need. I just called mine and learned that 18% of the kids are food insecure and they were seriously short on food needed for the Thanksgiving baskets they make up for the families. Do it now because most schools give out the baskets tomorrow.

If we can afford $40 for a game, we can afford $40 to help our children's classmates not go hungry on this upcoming long weekend.

And don't just give them the expired cans of enchilada sauce in your cupboard. Go to the store and buy a couple of flats of canned goods. $40 buys a lot of food for those in need. We've already had two food drives at both of our kids' schools, I think we spent about $60 between them and it was TONS of cans.

Our school was short on turkeys. With coupons and specials I was able to pick up 16 lb. turkeys for less than $8 each. I got some kids to carry them in for me. The kids totally had their minds blown by how thankful the folks putting together the boxes were. It was like those kids were deux en machina. I hope that experience stays with them, and they get hooked on giving.

It might be better to just give them the cash directly because quite often they get discounts that stretch the dollar further.

Incidentally, I recently took part in a 24 hour board gaming marathon that raised $37,000 for the local food bank / shelter. Felt good.

Our school works with a local grocery store to put together the boxes, but they seem to always fall short at the end. There seems to always be a family or 8, that fall on hard times after the count is given to the store. I always offer money, but the organizer would always rather have the food, because they also need the volunteer help to do the last minute shopping.

Our kids aren't in school yet, but I always give cash to the kids that come to the door ---- I figure that is better than just getting the "old enchilada sauce" out of the pantry

Our local stores always have these little colored tags that allows you to add 1, 5, or 10$ to the bill which goes to the Cincinnati/Northern KY food bank.
