What do I buy my rich in-laws?

My wife's sister and her husband have a big house. He owns a rock climbing gym and develops real estate. She is an accomplished painter. They have rescue greyhounds. She spends a lot of time landscaping and gardening. They have one son, who is 23, I think. He races his track porsche when he has time. They vacation in Palm Springs.

I'm wondering what to get them for $30 or so. I bought them Carcassonne once. Not sure if they ever played it. Another time a muscle car coffee table book. They seemed to like the remote control helicopter a lot. They don't buy whimsical stuff. He does have an air rifle that he uses for pests on the property.

We are not super close.

The clear choice. Available at Cabela's for $33 or so.

Well the first thing I'd ask is if they were naughty or nice ?

You can get a really nice and stylish shower head for that price.

$30 worth of toilet paper. They'll definitely use it. It's the great economic equalizer.

This (not necessarily this charity, but maybe something that would fit their particular interests / experiences).

I started giving donations in my parents' names as their presents years ago and they appreciated that much more than the CDs or kitchen gadgets or whatever I used to get them.

What would the social consequences be of not getting them anything?

In my family, parents get things for their kids, kids get things for their (under 18) siblings. I don't get anything for my (adult) siblings, my parents, my nieces/nephews/cousins/etc. Way less stressful and helps put the focus on family and spending time together, not buying stuff.

Make them something, if you can. It's unique and different.

I think dysjunct has the right approach. Although, it may be because it is what my family does.

This made my wife laugh out loud, which is actually a significant accomplishment.

What Thirsty said. Some of the best gifts are homemade gifts that the person didn't even realize they wanted until they receive it. A little creativity and elbow grease go a long way.
