Does anybody around here fly RC planes with micro setups?
I am intrigued by building some foam flyers and rigging them with Micro RC gear. We're talking 1/24 scale max.
I have scoped some RC forums, but I also wanted to hit up y'all for info if you have it.

I've always wanted to but never did. Did you know they have digital simulators of flying R/C planes? It's the most boring thing in the entire world.

MicroAces
Looking at these kits gave me the itch to jump in.
There is also a guy on one of the RC forums that built properly flyable Star Wars ships. Y-Wing, A-Wing, T-70. X-Wing.

I always wondered about battery life on those. My kids have choppers and the things are good for about 10 minutes max, although they rely on 100% of the motor to provide lift where these are only used for thrust.

I have a Hobby Zone Night Vapor slow-flyer. I set the center of gravity back a bit so that it floats around a little nose-up and I can have a pretty good time with it in the backyard.
It's jumpy in the wind, partly because of its weight and partly because of its large wing surface area. The little micro-planes are the opposite of that. They're super-lightweight but they also don't have a lot of wing surface area. I've flown one once and they aren't very forgiving. Unless you're a pretty experienced RC flyer -- I'm not -- you need to keep your speed up to keep them flying in a predictable way. You have less time to react to even the smallest amount of wind. That 0.5mph difference in wind speed between the ground and 15' up? These little planes really feel it. But where something like the Night Vapor bounces in the wind like a leaf, the micro plane I flew bounced in the wind like a powered ping pong ball. That said with more experience the wind would be less of a factor for a speedy little micro plane.
The micro planes are really fun to fly though. I've stuck with my Night Vapor though because it's a really good fit for relaxed around-the-yard flying, while the micro plane I flew, while a more interesting plane to fly, was a bit more stressful. Bottom line is if you want a zippy little scale-looking somewhat-acrobatic test-your-reflexes-while-you-learn plane the micro ones are great. If you're looking for something more forgiving and relaxing a slow-flyer is a better bet, at least on a calm day.
EDIT: I should add the Night Vapor is about 1/24 scale, but I don't really consider it the same class because it flies completely different from a scale-looking 1/24 plane.
