If you have family in Japan, esp near the east coast, you might want to track this as info becomes available. NOAA rates the likelihood of a tsunami in the region "high". Pacific-wide evaluation of tsunami threat is in progress.
Last edit: 11 Mar 2011 01:41 by Amontillado. Reason: east, not west coast

Saw some footage, this is going to be horrible, horrible. Look out everyone, tsunami warnings posted for HI, Pacific islands, Pacific coast (US & Can). 8.9 on the Richter, 80 mi off shore. HUGE quake.

I can't get over the shots with HOUSES floating with the rushing waters inland. Not just houses, but FLAMING HOUSES.

And I hope everything ends well with the nuclear plant that seems to be kinda iffy: www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/03/11/jap...r/index.html?hpt=T1#

NZ recently had another big earthquake in Christchurch which has pretty much levelled the CBD and caused quite a few fatalities, but they were saying that this one in Japan was 8000 times stronger!! Holy shitballs!

I'm on the NorCal coast (site of a 1964 tsunami that killed 12 people). The shape of the harbor kind of funnels tidal waves into it. Sirens have been going off every hour since 3am. All downtown was mandatorily evacuated, school was cancelled, most schools turned into shelters for people evacuated from the downtown area (about 100 square blocks of residential/business). Probably a "better safe than sorry" approach. So far the most damage has been from boats crushed up against each other and the docks getting ripped apart. No damage estimate yet. Power shut off downtown as a precaution. The lucky break is that the surges are peaking now (11am PST) but high tide was this morning at 2:45am. We did have three people get swept off river banks. Two were recovered. I guess they didn't think that dozens of tons of water shooting into the river mouths would do anything.

Anyway, the local media is kind of freaking out because it's the big story. Nothing compared to the utter devastation in Japan. Totally heartbreaking; I was looking at pictures and video this morning but had to stop. :(

I agree dys - it was a morbid fascination combined with the startling realization that I hadnt heard ANY sort of body count. Without any people in the pics/videos where the water is encroaching, part of me thought maybe most folks are safe.

Then I read that those closest on the Japanese coast had 5 minutes tops from quake to tsunami. Jesus.

I was in Sendai I'm guessing about 8 years ago. My wife was on a business trip at the Sony plant there. I remember being at the train station very near that river that the water came up. I also went to the coast there. The famous poet Basho had been there and wrote about the lovely tiny little islands out in the bay. We went out there to a couple. I'm quite sure they will be ruined for a lifetime, the vegetation ripped away and the little buildings on them destroyed.

Really such a tragic waste. I liked Sendai. Not a huge town as Japanese cities go, but not tiny either. I just hope that wave didn't make it as far as the populated downtown area.
