i guess that's why they employ a political editor who was a former chairman of the young conservatives (nick robinson) and a financial editor who is in the pocket of the murdoch corp (robert peston - see the handy 'leaking' - www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/robertp...e_said_about_ru.html )

I avoid news. It's usually distressing. I figure if something really important happens that I should know about, someone will post it here or on facebook.

I like to eat breakfast with the NYT, it's sort of local so I dig on all that shit too. I read the local weekly for sex advice.

Otherwise, I spend way too much time reading from way too many different digital sources. Being that I'm working on graduate poly sci stuff and my eventual doctoral thesis (and hopeful long term research direction) is on the use of the media and language/marketing within the modern political sphere, I suppose that's to be expected.

I love that people are accusing the BBC of being either too liberal OR too conservative. Seriously, I love it.

I'm a huge NPR junkie, myself.

Oh yeah, how could I forget! That's on in the car for short trips when I don't feel like deciding on something to put on the iphone. Handily enough, my favorite iphone news app is the NPR one, so I read a good deal of their posts too.

For standard news items, NPR. Naturally I have podcasts of interest. I usually follow the Planetary Report to keep up on space interest news. For science&skepticism I listen to Skeptic's Guide to the Universe, CFI's Point of Inquiry, and For Good Reason from the James Randi Institute.

I didn't know that! Where are you doing grad work at? I'm finishing my PHD this year in poly sci.

Right now I'm on my sidetrack to finish my secondary social studies teacher certification (sent in the paperwork on Friday actually!) since no one wanted to give me any money a couple years ago when I would have otherwise gone straight into my poly sci PhD. I need to make real money to make it work, so teaching high school for a while will let me get going enough. I'm deferred at UCONN, NYU still won't give me enough money to make me want to go there, but now I'm trying to sneak into Yale since I'm told I have the right stuff to get in on paper and it's mostly just a matter of being one of the lucky equally qualified candidates to actually get picked.

Sweet, sounds like you're looking at pretty good programs: NYU is a great (top 10!) program and obviously so is Yale. Uconn is decent but if you can get to those others definitely do it. My advice is if you're going to be an academic go to be the best place you can if you want to get a prof job, pedigree and big name advisers help out.

Rather than trying to avoid bias (which I'd argue is near impossible anyway), try reading The Telegraph- www.telegraph.co.uk/ and The Guardian- www.guardian.co.uk/ .

Between the two, you'll get a reasonably balanced overview.
