I hear you, and you're not wrong. I guess I just see this kind of talent- and it is sometimes very awesome talent, like those folks that did the Mass Effect costumes- and think that it's being squandered on convention costumes. But I guess there's another side to that too...my wife's friend did the makeup in Django Unchained and Lincoln, yet she does all of this really crazy, super professional cosplay stuff for fun.

What is the purpose of board games? A costume by its definition is made to be seen by others. I just love seeing people use their creativity and passion to make stuff. I'mma be the pee-on-the-parade jerk in the room... I'm just not impressed by any kind of cosplay anymore. I see this and I'm like "awesome, you invested a shitload of time and money to make a vacuform suit of armor that serves no purpose other than to impress people and have your picture taken in". Having a wife that works in film and television that makes props and costumes sort of takes a lot of the magic out too, I guess. I sat here and watched my wife make- from scratch- complete 1:1 replicas of all of the costumes from the '66 Batman series. Batman and Robin, Joker, King Tut, Riddler, Catwoman, Penguin...but it was for a professional job at Turner, not just smoe fandom/convention thing. Also doesn't help that I've seen it all. Halo Spartans, Aliens, Predators, mobile infantry from Starship Troopers, anime everything, blah blah blah. I've seen plenty of space marine costumes at Dragon Con. I remember when the home stormtrooper/Vader armor thing started up. I'm more impressed now when I see someone that does something more obscure, like these two guys that I saw a couple of years ago that were the cops from THX-1138. Or this couple that was Dave Vanian (she) and Captain Sensible (he) from the Damned. I would be TREMENDOUSLY impressed by a Star Destroyer or Shai Hu'lud costume. I do have an idea for a cosplay thing that if I did, it would blow everyone's minds. I won't give it away because it's too good of an idea. It would literally be the greatest costume of all time. And it would be one of the simplest. But I do love seeing kids in costumes. Last Halloween, the best costume I saw was this kid, maybe 10 or 11 years old, that made his own Deadpool costume. Was not accurate or any of that. But he made his own mask, strapped some weapons on his back, and was livin' it.

Wednesday I'll be starting a new job. I'm going to work for a very successful local comic book store. We've got a lease to move to a new location that will have room to sell board games and Magic, as well as give us room for about 75 players. I'me excited for the prospect of turning a hobby into a job, but I'm slightly apprehensive too. I hope that this won't destroy my love of games (I don't think it will) and I fear that I will eventually come to loathe some of the mouthbreathers that will inevitably become my best customers(almost guaranteed to happen). So keep your fingers crossed for me.

As for Iraq specifically, if you want to discuss how bad an idea it is that the US outsources all its non-combat military functions to the private sector. Happy to indulge. All that infrastructure work? Hell, and even all the US's own on-base work--food prep, construction, ash&trash hauling, etc.--was done by contractors. It's a bad idea to push all that shit to for-profit corporations (and the one I work for certainly made millions doing it), but that's the way of the world these days. And I actually *do* believe we fucked up by killing Saddam unless we were prepared to stay for 50 years. Everyone on earth knew that wasn't going to happen, so it really was going to be up to the Iraqis to deal with the utterly inevitable low-intensity civil war. Don't know what to tell you there. All the high minded talk in the world about responsibilities doesn't mean shit if the government is unwilling or unable to govern. We certainly played a fine role in creating a government possible unable to govern, but I certainly question the willingness. The US used up whatever legitimacy it had in the country long ago, so, for good or ill, it's on them. Israel, is of course, a different problem. I think it's kind of sad that folks forget that Israel was considered to be more a Soviet client state until Nixon and the '73 war. Now that might not be particularly appropriate (they were no more a Soviet client than Nehru's India was), but it's not like we've been standing arm in arm with the Israelis since 1948--but we weren't/aren't going to allow the country to be wiped off the map, which was actually a possibility until the US engaged (and the Israelis certainly repaid that debt by stealing as much Soviet military hardware as they could and passing it along to our analysts. A former USAF intel officer coworker has a great story about the Israelis dropping in special forces troops and airlifting out an entire *active* Syrian SAM site so the US could reverse engineer the launch and sensor systems.) Though, of course, you'd never know that if you listen to that darling of American think tanks and world media, "the Arab street." Now, they certainly provide a lot of capability and support in the region that we desire, but they're also the source of an awful lot of our own policy problems (and, hell, any number of US domestic political issues. The latest go'round with the SECDEF senate confirmation hearings illustrated that, in the cartoonish world of US domestic politics, "less than 100% support for Israel" essentially equates to "anti-Semitism." ) Can't and won't simply hang them out to dry, but I'm not at all a fan of the way Israeli politics can figure so prominently in US policymaking. Personally, I'd rather see much heavier engagement with Venezuela [because we *need* their oil a lot and their copper more than a little] and Brazil [the dominant economy of the region], and Mexico [now this mess I *will* pin almost entirely on the US and we need to do much better here], than Saudi Arabia, Iran, Israel, and that pimple on the ass of Iraq in which Andy lives. In the end, I'm just unbelievably tired of the blood and treasure we funnel into the region (and have done so for the last half-century). It's for *far* more than just keeping the oil flowing, and I'm exhausted by it because the returns are proving, after 50 years, to be negligible for the price paid.

Bad shit is happening every single second every single day, while we post shit here, write about games, complain about kickstarter, sit in our luxurious life and enjoy the trappings we've been fortunate enough to be born into. Every single one of us could in fact at any point DO A FUCKTON MORE to make the world a better place, but choose not to, or rather choose to go along their own way enjoying what they have and paying lip service to the amount of good we could actually do if we were really really honest with ourselves so, really, we're ALL just cunts.
