Fantastic. Great crime drama starring Chris Pine and the always amazing Jeff Bridges as a Texas Ranger trying to outwit some small-time bank robbers.

Pretty boy Chris Pine takes a bit of time to grow into the role of a mastermind bank robber, but don't worry. He does. All the characters are remarkably deep. Even just a random waitress is explored to a surprising amount.

The cinematography is beautiful. You really feel the big sky of Texas and it's great.

Note that this isn't an action movie at all, it's VERY slow and I like that. Nice slow boil, which makes explosive moments much more impactful and unexpected. Some people in the theatre were disappointed that there wasn't more action, so just make sure your expectations are in check.

The last scene is pure perfection. Heard from this movie-goer out loud, "...wow." Edge of my seat.

Best movie of the year so far, and it was about damn time too.

Heart rating: 5 stars

Brain rating: 4.5 stars

The movie provided a clear and sympathetic viewpoint for each of its main characters. The one constant villain in the piece appears to be the bank. Sure, we're allowed to see the impact the robberies have on the employees of the bank, but the movie doesn't let you forget that it's the bank as a whole that's a real bag of dicks. You're left cheering on both the cops and robbers, which, for me, gives it the "edge of your seat" moment. I'm still not sure who to root for in the final scene.

When I saw this, I was thinking, "This is good, this is good, this is good, this is good..." And then about 2/3 through it turned into "this is great." It kind of arrived. Nothing earth-shattering, I suppose, and some things were even typical/predictable, but just done very very well.

Not the film of the year for me (so far that's Sing Street), but a great one.
