It stinks that the people who hold Wiz-War in high esteem are scattered to the four corners.

It would be an epic play group.

RE Ares Project; I am one of the few people that really digs it. I like double blind systems (which this is) I like the video gamey strategy feel to it, and i like the in built tempo to the game. You build up armies behind screens and then throw dice at each other. After a few games you start to learn the speed at which the different factions build up, and the different routes you can take with each deck. I also quite like the base building aspect. In some respects it feels similar to Sirlins newer rts inspired magic clone. It is also sort of unique, no other card game plays like it. It is definitely worth a spin but i think it will always be a niche game. Its a 2 player, or 2 team game, the 3 and 4 way bashes can be fun but don't really work.

p.s. Wizwar is great

Battleball is great, but now that TechnoBowl exists, get that. It's so great.

What?!
I recall you and Drunk Dwarf Dan were fans, but is it still getting played?

I played some Man O War this summer and have looked at getting Dreadfleet. Not as a replacement for MoW, but just for a all in one fantasy naval game.

Top 5, huh?

Dreadfleet is more of a spirit of Ameritrash pick. I do love it, but i wouldn't classify it as a great game in a competitive or strategic sense, but both it dice duel always remind me why AT is great. They are always a bit of a raucous if in different ways. I think i last played it about a year and a half ago, given the frequency with which i play boardgames these days that is fairly recent.

I don't think people talk about such a thing as spirit of AT enough around here.

Godzilla hearts Jet Jaguar.

Hells bells. I adore #2-5. I guess I should give Neuroshima Hex! a try.

Same here. But I would want to play NH before I pay for it, because it looks like it might be a little too dry and abstract for my tastes.

It has a very good app available. But playing the AI won’t thrill you. It’s very much like asymmetric chess. And some pieces have rocket launchers.

I can't remember what I posted eight years ago (I'll check later) but I doubt my list has changed too much:

1. Battlestar Galactica
2. Fortress America (love affair keeps it here)
3. Twilight Imperium 3
4. Runewars
5. Firefly

heading off the rest of the pack:

Forbidden Stars
Middle Earth Quest
Eldritch Horror
Cosmic Encounter
War of the Ring 2E

And from opening day eight years ago:

Arkham Horror
Battlestar Galactica
War of the Ring
Fortress America
The Fury of Dracula

Two demoted, not even in a top dozen these days.
