Five? Out of all eras?!!! Ouch.

Ok, here goes:

Europa Universalis (if you want to call it a wargame - but I can't see
non-wargamers touching it)

La Grande Guerre

Civil War (VG)

The Korean War

And now I'm stumped. Probably another edge case, like Empires of the Middle Ages,
Pax Britannica, or Here I Stand. But, if you drop EU (for the same reasons as those
others) I guess I'd go with Thunder at the Crossroads and Chariots of Fire? Maybe?

I'm a lot happier doing my 'best in class' lists. :P

mine could probably do with an update:

1. Sekigahara
2. OCS Burma
3. Hannibal RvC
4. The Korean war
5. OCS Reluctant Enemies.

I knew you liked Korean War Calandale, but was surprised to see it on a top 5, even if top 5s are so restrictive.

It's a hell of a game. When I try to think across all
factors, it ends up not only terribly innovative, but
also a very good simulation of factors not usually covered.
Plus, it's fun.

Part of the problem is that I don't like wargames most - I like
things that run just a little broader (hence EU, Pax, ect.) or maybe
even further out (La Rvolution Francaise). Most wargames fit into
a comfy zone - but they don't stand out terribly. The Korean War really does.

Definitely, OCS is still on the top of my list. I still have to try D Day at Omaha and the Tarawa solo one but Reluctant Enemies is great.

With my new love for COIN I really think they should be there as well

Maybe

Andean Abyss
Fire in the Lake
Triumph of Chaos
Burma OCS
Enemy at the Gate/Case Blue OCS

Late to the party, but here goes:

1. Washington's War: No American Revolution combines Washington's Fabian tactics, using the military to meet political goals, and historical events.
2. Empire of the Sun: Most epic, life-changing, awe-inspiring card driven game ever.
3. Hands in the Sea: Deck Building game on the First Punic War. It is coming out 1Q 2016. I play-tested the heck out of this one.
4. Band of Brothers (Screaming Eagles/Ghost Panzer): No other tactical system captures WWII tactical doctrine as realistically. Even more amazing is the rules are so simple.
5. Autumn of Glory: Any of the 5 games in Clash of Arms' Civil War Campaign Series would fit. All are great. Incredibly realistic cavalry system and excellent combat system.
