Ameritrash Badge-holders Ratings: 2012 Hot

Stack of gaming goodnessIt’s that time of year again when I head on over to boardgamegeek and compile the average game ratings of everyone that’s bought an Ameritrash Fan badge and make a top fifty chart. In some ways it’s a meaningless excercise in number crunching but I know of no better way of capturing the zeitgeist of the Ameritrash community: certainly the “thematic games” domain on TOS falls woefully short. And people seem to love it, so I keep on churning out the stats year after year.

In case you’re new to this, here’s the rules. Only the ratings of people with an Ameritrash Fan microbadge count, and only games that have at least 30 ratings make the list. Beyond that it’s just a standard average of the ratings. Only the base game counts, although for games that have particularly interesting expansion ratings I’ve commented in the list. And for games with more than one version or edition only the highest-ranking one is counted.

This is the fifth year running I’ve done this, and some all-time classics are in danger of dropping off the list for good. So I thought I’d do something new this year to commemorate them for the future. Games now have “gold” or “silver” status. Silver means they’ve made the top fifty for five years or more. Gold means they’ve made the top 25 for five years or more. In future years I’ll be recording and remembering games that have earned these awards but vanished from the list, so new gamers won’t forget them. And it’ll be a while before any golds drop off the list, but gold status is a sign that anyone on this site should play the game, sharpish, if they hadn’t done so already, as they’re the creme de la creme of the genre.

So without further ado on with the list. I’ve not commented on every entry as some need no explanation.

49 Hammer of the Scots - SILVER - Average rating 7.74 - down 11

48 Descent: Jouneys in the Dark - SILVER - Average rating 7.74 - down 15

These two games were partly my inspiration behind instituting the awards, to ensure that these once-revered classics were not forgotten. Although since Descent is due to see a flash new edition sometime this year it’ll be interested to see if interest is revived in next years’ chart. The favourite Descent expansion is no longer Road to Legend, possibly because of playability issues, but is now Tomb of Ice with 8.17.

47 Paths of Glory - Average rating 7.75 - down 16

46 King of Tokyo - Average rating 7.75 - New Entry

Given the fanfare that was accorded to this game in various end-of-year awards shows it’s somewhat surprising to find it languishing down at forty seventh spot. I have no good explanations.

45 Fury of Dracula - SILVER - Average rating 7.75 - down 16
Little disappointed to find that one of my all time favourites only made silver. But then again my preferred version is the Games Workshop edition which didn’t even make the list!

44 Nexus Ops - SILVER - Average rating 7.75 - Non Mover

43 Tichu - Average rating 7.76 - Non Mover

42 Monsterpocalypse - Average rating 7.77 - New Entry

A surprise new entry for this relatively old (2008) game about which I know very little. Cool miniatures though.

41 Indonesia - Average rating - 7.77 - New Entry

Been wondering if we’d ever see this famously monstrous and thematic, if dry game on here. Have to see if it sticks around.

40 Napoleon's Triumph - Average rating 7.77 - down 8

39 Defenders of the Realm - Average rating 7.77 - down 23

This is the biggest drop on the entire list. I’m not surprised: co-operative games seem to be going out of fashion somewhat, and this was just a straight re-skinning of Pandemic.

38 Cyclades - Average rating 7.77 - New Entry

Released last year but it’s take a while to gain sufficient traction to penetrate this list. It’s a favourite of a lot of F:AT readers but the badge rankings are not the same demographic - it’ll be interested to see if this can hold its place.

37 Advanced Civilization - SILVER - Average rating 7.82 - down 12

36 Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation (Deluxe Edition) - SILVER - Average rating 7.82 - down 13

Not one I enjoyed particularly but a proven track record on the list. I’ll be glad to see it gone, not least because the ridiculously long name always screws up the formatting.

35 Commands & Colors: Ancients - SILVER - Average rating 7.88 - down 7

34 Wings of War: Miniatures - Average rating 7.89 - New Entry

33 Up Front - Average rating 7.9 - down 11

If the ever elusive reprint materialises, we might see some movement back up the list.

32 Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition - Average rating 7.9 - New Entry

Some people’s very definition of Ameritrash, a spanking new edition has bought this old dinosaur onto the list for the first time.

31 Summoner Wars - Average rating 7.91 - New Entry

Yes folks, it’s the first time it’s been on the list. I suspect previous releases and expansions and suchlike were a bit scatter-gun to meet the criteria. Now we’ve got the master set material is consolidated somewhat and I expect to see this here for a while to come.

30 Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit - SILVER - Average rating 7.96 - up 6

Every year this has been on the list I’ve wondered how enough people have been able to find and play a copy in order to rate it. Now I’m wondering how enough people managed to do it to push it up a respectable six places! Here’s hoping Fantasy Flight’s acquisition of the Star Wars licence means a new edition might be in the works!

29 Merchants & Marauders - Average rating 7.96 - New Entry

Much like King of Tokyo, end-of-year frenzy over this might have made you think it’d come in higher. Especially seeing as ….

28 Star Trek: Fleet Captains - Average rating 7.97 - New Entry

… this little discussed and occasionally derided new game pipped it in the rankings.

27 Arkham Horror - SILVER - Average rating 7.98 - down 9

Yes folks, only silver for Arkham Horror - two places higher and it’d have made gold. Let’s hope it makes the places back next year and gets the shiny slot it deserves. The highest rated big-box expansion was Innsmouth horror with a big 8.63, and the highest rated small-box was King i Yellow with a respectable 8.08.

26 Blood Bowl - Team Manager - Average rating 8.00 - New Entry

Yet another one you might have expected to see higher. And there’s plenty more new entries to come.

25 Washington's War - Average rating - 8.01 - down 16

24 Combat Commander: Europe - GOLD - Average rating 8.02 - down 12

Our first gold recipient is in fact a war game!

23 Railways of Europe - SILVER - Average rating 8.03 - up 19

A very noteworthy entry this. It’s the only bona fide, unarguably full-blooded Eurogame to have gained an award of either colour (based on its previous incarnation as Railroad Tycoon). It’s also the highest climber at a whopping 19 places on a list where constant new entries mean that old favourites usually fall. Boosted no doubt by some cracking expansions, this is nevertheless without a doubt the favourite Euro of the Ameritrash crowd.

22 Crockinole - Average rating 8.03 - up 4

21 A Few Acres of Snow - Average rating 8.04 - New Entry

All the fuss about the Halifax Hammer doesn’t seem to have made much of an impact on opinions of this game in this demographic.

20 Through the Ages - Average rating 8.05 - down 3

The only serious challenger to Railways of Europe as best Euro from the list is currently ahead of it, but dropping. Will it stick around to take the crown next year? I reckon it might.

19 Cosmic Encounter - SILVER - Average rating 8.05 - down 13

Only silver for this long time favourite, as early entries were harmed by its relative scarcity. But will it make gold before it drops out of the top 25? The favourite of the slew of expansions is Cosmic Incursion with a huge score of 8.83.

18 Gears of War - Average rating 8.06 - New Entry

Passed me by somewhat, but it good showing for this new co-operative game.

17 Dominion: Prosperity - Average rating 8.1 - New Entry

The stats for Dominion are odd because of all the variant editions. Prosperity is the current favourite but taken as a whole this is, shockingly, not far off getting a gold award! Only you, brave readers, can stop that from happening by voting down this pile of theme-less garbage and its ilk. Get to it!

16 Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage - Average rating 8.13 - down 5

15 Runewars - Average rating 8.14 - down 8

14 Dune - GOLD - Average rating 8.14 - down 6

Once the number one game on this list, Dune has fallen slightly out of favour, but not so far as to not qualify for a gold award.

13 Chaos in the Old World - Average rating 8.14 - up 2

Holding very well all by itself, but the sometimes maligned Horned Rat expansion scores a whopping 8.97 from Ameritrash badge holders.

12 Blood Bowl - SILVER - Average rating 8.15 - up 7

I already highlighted that climbing is fairly rare for games on this list. Blood Bowl is, I think, the only one to have managed it every single year. Boosted this time I suspect by the release of Team Manager, the original has nevertheless left its younger sibling trailing a long way behind in its wake.

11 Labyrinth: The Global War on Terror - Average rating 8.17 - New Entry

A high new entry for a favourite of the previous year. Whilst daring I’m not sure this has that much longevity compared with other CDGs - time will tell.

10 Here I Stand - Average rating 8.19 - Non Mover

09 Eclipse - Average rating 8.19 - New Entry

A mere ninth place for one of the big stories from the wrap of 2011. And there are not one, but two more new entries yet to come. Can you guess what they are yet?

08 Twilight Imperium - GOLD - Average rating 8.23 - down 3

Many may have deemed Eclpise the slayer of this venerable and much-loved gold award game, but for now the ratings say the majority think differently. As ever the famous Shattered Empires expansion gets an average score that *ahem* eclipses everything on the list, 9.05. And the little-discussed Shards of the Throne expansion isn’t far behind with an 8.93 average.

07 Claustrophobia - Average rating 8.25 - up 6

Respect to this for being the biggest climber in the top ten.

06 Mage Knight - Average rating 8.38 - New Entry

Here’s the other big news game of 2011. The ratings suggest that the majority agree with Micheal Barnes that it’s better than Eclipse. But it’s still not the highest new entry!

05 Battlestar Galactica - Average rating 8.39 - down 3

Down three for this former number one but still holding steady in the top five. Exodus is the favoured expansion with a good 8.48 average.

04 War of the Ring - GOLD - Average rating 8.4 - Non Mover

One of only two games to have been in the top five in every iteration of the list.

03 Space Hulk - GOLD - Average rating 8.45 - Non Mover

02 Earth Reborn - Average rating 8.52 - New Entry

So who saw this coming? Didn’t win many awards. Has been on Tanga. Not discussed much except by die-hard fans but ultimately loved by all those who’ve tried it. It’s the highest new entry and claims the number two spot by a considerable margin over Space Hulk. I just wish we could have Tanga over here in the UK so I could have afforded a copy.

01 Twilight Struggle - GOLD - Average rating 8.62 - Non Mover

It’s the number one game on boardgamegeek. It’s my number one game. It’s been the number one game here for three years running and in the top five every year. Respect to Jason and Ananda. Respect.

So there’s the list. A couple of things I wanted to highlight. First is the number of small or non movers in the top ten. We’re really hitting some consistency now is terms of taste in games and that’s nice to see. Second is the relatively poor showing of a number of last years’ popular titles. Some of this is down to the fact that the cream of the crop last year didn’t put in an appearance until December and so missed some award lists, but nevertheless I think it casts doubt on the frequently made assertion that 2011 was such a bumper year in terms of quality. According to these ratings, on the whole older games are still preferred.

See you next year!

    Always love this column.

  • avatarStormcow

Monsterpocalypse got a boost in 2011 because of the release of much friendlier, complete-armies-in-a-box packaging. Myself, I didn't dare touch it back when it was still a CMG, but now here I am shilling it. Great game.

ER taking a running jump to 2nd place is just amazing.

It would be interesting to know how much of the movement comes from new people getting the badge just now. There does seem to be a disconnect with the newer games, and I can only presume it's because there are a whole bunch of badge holders that don't post on F:AT.

BRB, gonna go rate all my Dominion expansions as 10s.

  • avatarscissors

Yep, I love this annual list :)

"...nevertheless I think it casts doubt on the frequently made assertion that 2011 was such a bumper year in terms of quality"

I don't know, I really do feel this year was a bumper year for AT - the range, from semi-coop like Gears to card management like Blood Bowl: TM to stuff like MK, Eclipse and the small-print Cave Evil - was very rich both thematically and in terms of mechanics. Sure, some of those games might not hold up as well as we thought initially over the long-term, but we certainly got a lot of choice this year. Seemed like more than the usual to me at least, just a gut feeling.

    Great news about Earth Reborn.

  • avatarJazzbeaux

Damn, only played 16 out of 49. Got a long way to go to complete this list.

  • avatarehanuise

    Great list, and quite consistent.
I expect Mage Knight to only make a short stay on the list, 'though. As smart and elaborate the game may be, its mechanics are much more closer to the wooden-cube clan than expected for such a theme. But then what do I know, I must be wrong ^^

  • avatarSuperflyTNT

I'd like to see how the lists compare:

    AT Badgeholders
    FA Badgeholders

I wonder how we rate against the TOSsers...

  • avatarMattDP

Glad everyone looks forward to this :)

    Quote:

The accumulation of badges is fairly steady - it's been ~100 per year. We've got over 700 now.

    Quote:

Oh I'd agree we got more than usual. I'm more talking about the quality - after a couple of weak years it seems possible that people's expectations have diminished. What this list seems to be saying is that although there are a lot of new games on the block, quality wise people don't think they match up to older offerings.

    Quote:

I wouldn't even try. People are fickle and huge jumps are not uncommon. Stick to the gold and silver games - they're the ones that have bee consistently enjoyed.

Go work it out yourself then. It takes quite long enough to produce this list!

Well have got 3 of 6 gold done, missing Combat Commander: Europe, Dune and Twilight Imperium. Not the easiest games to get played!
Then 7 of 12 silver done, missing Arkham Horror, Cosmic Encounter, Fury of Dracula (FFG), Queens Gambit and Railways of Europe.

Thanks Matt! This is the one "best of" year end report that I really look forward to a lot! Appreciate all the hard work you put in keeping it going.

  • avatarNot Sure

I bought an Ameritrash badge in the BGG giveaway this year, just becuase I was tired of not being counted in this list.

I've had the FA badge for ages, I'd just never bothered to get the Ameritrash one.

  • avatarubarose

Ameritrash is attracting too many :) wargamers and DoaM players, and pushing all the lighter adventure/questing/dungeon crawls off the list.

I may have to start a recruiting drive to get more lapsed RPGers to get AT microbadge and move Arkham Horror and Fury of Dracula back to their proper places of honor. And get Talisman back on the list for heaven's sake. I suffered abuse for liking that game for too many years to go down without a fight. Also Railways of Fucking Europe, but no Merchant of Venus. What is this bullshit. :)

  • avatarNeonPeon

Arkham Horror should be in the top 5. :(

Yes, it is. This is especially a problem with wargames but then there's always been a big crossover between the two communities.

    Quote:

Well personally I think it's well gone - mediocre game in my opinion :D But in terms of this list it's certainly suffering from it being compiled from ratings on TOS: much like Monopoly over there it's held up - totally unfairly - far too often as an example of "bad design" and all the sheep follow the leader.

    Quote:
Also Railways of Fucking Europe, but no Merchant of Venus. What is this bullshit. :)

That's just accessibility. There aren't enough people who've played MoV to make it chart. If we see one of the reprints actually hit the shelves this year I don't doubt that'll change.

  • avatarubarose

    @ Matt

Yeah, I know. Actually I'm glad of the crossover between wargamers and ATers. I see more wargamers showing up at game nights and game groups looking to get in a big old Doam game, knowing that game groups are no longer completely composed of Eurogamers.

The down side is I sometimes feel like the shift means that even among self identified ATers the lighter games (particularly adventure/questing/story games) - the games that put the Trash in AmeriTrash are beginning to get the same snob treatment that they were getting form Eurogamers ten years ago.

Or maybe I'm just cranky because most of the lapsed RPGers who used to play with me are either Baby Jail or busy keeping their teen-aged Spawns out of jail.

Railroad games are becoming their own genre like wargames. I have friends that are virtually exclusive railers now.

I don't have an AT badge and don't consider myself exclusively AT. I come here because the level of discussion is so much higher. I think a lot of the growth here is people like that. That's going to mean people that generally play things other than Nexus Ops and Talisman.

  • avatarGary Sax

I wonder what the F:AT badge ratings would look like over time... I guess I can go check that out myself.

I don't know if that is a backhanded compliment or insult....mabye both :)

  • avatarShellhead

I consider DoaM games to be an important part of AmeriTrash, though they are not my favorites. In theory, this list is an ingenious way to keep tabs on trends in AT games, but I swear that half the games on this year's list aren't even AT games.

  • avatarJonJacob

I don't have either of those badges so I'm not included in the poll in anyway.

It's a little irritating to see Twilight Struggle take the top spot so often. I don't dislike the game but it's not a lot of fun either. Then Here I Stand and Labyrinth show up right afterwards. It's the same fucking game!

Nice to see Earth Reborn climb so high. It deserves it. I still play this all the time. Space Hulk can now take it's rightful place just below ER. TI:3 holding on warms my heart too. Strange Descent fell so far, good time to bring on version 2.

    :)

I have to say that my AT tastes are also more on the DoaM side. I am just not a big fan of the Adventure games much anymore. But on the bright side, I left my wargaming tendencies far behind as well.

  • avatarSagrilarus  - re: re: re:

Most people don't play Nexus Ops and Talisman. With one of the primary draws of this site being it's higher level of discussion you're going to see people coming from all sections of the hobby. That's all I'm saying. The site does not select specifically on game taste in spite of its name.

    S.

  • avatarclockwirk

    What, no Imperial?

  • avatarMsample

Indonesia??? Really??? Played it once last year, never again. HORRIBLE hard to read map. No hidden info, and suffers from AP on the last turn as a result.

Yeah, I'm an outlier among outliers. I'm need to start a website called Female Gamers Who Play Talisman and Nexus Ops. It will only have 5 members. Three of which will rate Nexus Ops a weak 7; two of which will be f*cking LARPERS; and all four of the other chicks will friend me on facebook and spam me with Zanga game requests.

  • avatarEgg Shen

Cosmic Encounter isn't even in the top 10? To see it behind games like Gears of War and Dominion makes me sad.

I'm also with Uba...where is Talisman? Fuck the haters! Talisman should be somewhere in the God-damn top 50.

Regardless, nice work Matt. Thanks for taking the time to compile all of this data.

  • avatarInfinityMax

What, no Warhammer Quest? That's my favorite game ever!

But then, I don't have one of those badges. So my opinion doesn't count.

  • avatarShellhead

Maybe we could have a list of the Top 50 actual AmeriTrash games, as rated by AmeriTrash badge holders. I know there would be some fussing over which games do or don't count as AT, but it's safe to say that Dominion, that train game, and blatant war games should all get the boot.

  • avatardragonstout

I, too, have a F:AT badge, but no AT badge, so I don't get counted (and don't keep my BGG ratings up-to-date anyway, so I probably shouldn't be; I really need to go and do that).

Complaining that it's not a list of the top 50 AT games is lame. Seriously, maybe 15% of the list is not AT, so first of all it's not a big deal, and secondly it's more interesting to see what wargames & eurogames ATers like than to not see that.

  • avatarubarose

@ Shellhead HA! Sounds like I may have to consider reviving the recommendations section.

BTW I have a couple of micro-badge coupons if anyone here wants an AT badge so their ratings can be counted next year. PM me. If I get more than 2 requests, preference will be given to whomever rates Talisman the highest :)

  • avatarInfinityMax

Uba, my rating of Talisman depends entirely on which Talisman we're discussing. The new one - I liked it. The one in the flat red box with the Warhammer minis - stupid.

  • avatarubarose

    @Infinity Max

Bonus points for not liking the stupid red box version (3rd edition) with the warhammer minis and the ugly skull art work.

  • avatarscissors

Games I wouldn't mind if they dropped of the list, AT, AT classic or otherwise:

Arkham Horror (glad you didnt make Gold, ha!), Indonesia, railways of whatever, TS irrespective of how good it is).

Game that should be on the list:

    Talisman.

Whether or not you like them, Here I Stand is really really not the same game.

I'm hyperbolizing a little. They feel the same to me, the basic mechanics are pretty damn similar. They're all ok but they also feel like a family of games rather then three totally seperate games.

  • avatarMsample

Other than the fact that they use cards, all three games use pretty different mechanics from one another. Labyrinth, it could be argued, descended from the same "tree" of CDG design as Twilight Struggle, but the plays very differently.

As for Warhammer Quest not making it, its OOP status and very high price probably contribute to it not showing up .

Not to mention the fact that the game sucks...But I think I'm in the minority on that one.

  • avatarSchweig!

I used to compile a list of F:AT member ratings, but at some point I just stopped caring. The account should still exist on BGG if anybody cares taking it over.

  • avatarSpace Ghost

TS is so thematic, so that makes it ok by me.

@Shellhead -- part of the problem is how the rankings are compiled. This is not a knock on Matt; this stuff is a pain in the ass to compile. I have some access to some of of their data and I have been working on a recommendation system that is done via visualization.

Given work realities, it will probably be done sometime later this Spring. So far, it really works well. It also breaks AT into different dimensions (adventure vs. doam, etc.).

  • avatarjeb  - Coupla things

    1) Why only 49 entries?
    2) I am working up my meta-analysis that follows on the heels of this beauty.
    3) Matt's a little off when he says CYCLADES and SUMMONER WARS are new entries--they were there last year (24 --> 38 for CYCLADES; 20 --> 31 for SUMMONER WARS).
    4) Here's what dropped off:
    14. SID MEIER'S CIVILIZATION
    21. ToTAN
    27. 7 WONDERS
    30. CoH: AWAKENING THE BEAR
    34. THE REPUBLIC OF ROME
    35. STARCRAFT (!)
    37. MIDDLE-EARTH QUEST
    39. FRIEDRICH
    40. ASL
    41. DOMINANT SPECIES
    45. BRASS
    46. HEROSCAPE: SotM
    47. TIDE OF IRON
    48. DREAMBLADE
    49. WARHAMMER: INVASION
    50. DUNGEONQUEST (3E)

  • avatarDeath and Taxis

Eh? No StarCraft, no Talisman, no Heroscape, no Cutthroat Caverns, no Last Night on Earth. But Dominion, Through The Ages, and Railways of Europe? And WTF is Indonesia?

We are being infiltrated I tell you!

  • avatarKen B.

Nice list, always a great read.

    I've played 25/50.

Nice peek into the minds and tastes of fellow badgeholders. KEEP THEM AY-TEE BANNERS FLAPPIN' Y'ALL

I have no doubt that Matt was rigorous in accurately compiling this list. It's just that the results undermine the point of the exercise, at least in my opinion. It would be like if we were rating hot babes and names like George Clooney and Justin Bieber were showing up in the rankings.

Wow, Claustrophobia. Glad to see it rising. It's a game that definitely has staying power. Even among other dudes in a hall games, it has a lot of unique things to offer.

I am pretty surprised to see Earth Reborn so high...

Glad to see NON "AT" games on here. I like to see what ALL games these folks are playing, regardless of provincialism.

  • avatarBearn

For all the "bad art" ER has it is still a very detailed and fun game to play if you want that level of detail. Unfortunately it's so nitch it will probably never see an expansion or at least take as long as the claustrophobia one took to be released.

I'm with Rose on the talisman thing. The new edition is a very good one and reminds me a great deal of my old second edition i dumped a few years ago. Third edition GW did was just awful and i seriously don't event count it as an edition of the game. My daughter loves the game so much though so i can't not play it.

Have hope though Rose my GF loves Talisman and i can't get her to stop playing me in Nexus Ops. Then again she loves the new Mage Knight and is about 50/50 with me at WoTR. Not all female gamers are into the lamer games. :)

Uba! The [ code] tag should use a fixed width font. Tsk tsk!

This list is a resorting of Matt's list. All the entries are the same, the distinction is that this one sorts on the DIFFERENCE between AT-badgeholder rankings and BGG-overall rankings. Scoring high on this list means that an AT-badgeholder is likely to rank the game higher than a random BGG member. So, while all these games are well liked by AT-badgeholders, this list sorts them roughly by HOW MUCH an AT-badgeholder likes the game compared to BGG at large.

As you would expect, wargames are loved by grognards more than ATers, so things like NAPOLEON'S TRIUMPH and PATHS OF GLORY sort to the bottom. Same goes for obvious Euros like DOMINION: PROSPERITY and THROUGH THE AGES. Contrast with SPACE HULK, which is nice and all from the BGG perspective, but just -loved- by ATers.

Where it gets interesting are things like ECLIPSE and MAGE KNIGHT--more likely to be ranked highly by a random BGGer than a card-carrying AT fan. This could be a couple of things--they might just be good Euros, as some here would attest. You could also see it as Cult of the New on BGG, where new games get a big boost without much merit. These games have been hard to come by so far, and so no matter who gets it, they are ranking it highly.

  • avatarjwoodall04

I'm an ATer that loves Indonesia. It's kind of like an AT game cuz you can steal the other fuckin' dudes company. "Hey nice job building that up - now give it to me so I can profit at your expense..." I think it is those vicious/brutal moments that cross-over for ATers. Same reason I want to try Circus Train, I just know it must be tight enough that someone is going to want to cry when you steal their elephant or show. :)

I don't want to play a euro where the end score is 32, 31, 30, 28 because there are nice catch up mechanisms and point differentials are designed to make it seem close. When I punch someone in the gut I want them to feel it!

That said, I do not have an AT badge on my current BGG account. Something I shall remedy. And I will do my damndest to get Dominion off this fuckin' list.

  • avatarChapel

I'm also an AT'er who also loves Indonesia on occasion, but it's an AT'ers nightmare. It is completely and utterly the definition of a spread sheet game to the Nth degree.

Circus train is also a DRY DRY DRY spread sheet euro in a strange colorful wrapping.

    Then again, I make a piss poor AT'er. ;)

  • avatarShellhead

    Awesome work Jeb! Very interesting.

50 comments and no-one has pointed out that Matt made a mistake with Dominion that should (hopefully) push it down a bit. Prosperity, while in the same size box as the original) is a pure expansion, not a stand alone game and thus gets the expansion boost. The only stand alone Dominion games are Dominion Intrigue.

Apart from that it is always a worthy list to read, and I bought my AT badge solely so I could be included on.

  • avatarKen B.

Nice sort job, Jeb. That's actually how I'd expect the list to look, total quality. Many of my favorite games of all time are in that top 10.

  • avatarjeb

Which are the standalone games? DOMINION and DOMINION INTRIGUE? Are there others? I can't parse that sentence.

  • avatargroth

How far off is Castle Ravenloft from either Matt's or jeb's lists?

  • avatarSpace Ghost

Just Dominion and Intrigue. The latter is a hell of a lot better than the former.

  • avatarStan Leer

Suggestion: Consider letting folks know when the this column is coming to actually log into BGG and update, Haven't done so in years since I have been lurking here. How the hell else would I know to rank the shitty Dominion to properly reflect my disdain?

I just bought an FA badge for next year. Didn't even realize that there was one. I have been relying on my old AT badge for being counted.

I never played Railroad Tycoon but it sounded fun. I bought Chicago Express since I used to live there and it sounded like a good rail game to try out. (remains on shelf unplayed. Bought to round our collection to have a railroad game)

Railroad Tycoon was the shit for while. Is Railways from Europe really a reprint/new version? Worth getting for someone curious but never having played Railroad Tycoon?

Sorry I missed an "and". As Space Ghost said the first two are the stand alone games, Dominion and Dominion Intrigue.

Railways of Europe is an Expansion for Railways of the World/Railroad Tycoon. You need one of the base games, because Railways of Europe doesn't include the little trains or the cubes. The map of Europe is tighter than the map of the US, so it plays better than the US map when you only have 3 or 4 players. Neither really plays well with only 2 players.

  • avatarjeb

Matt, and by proxy, I, can do a quick weighted average of families of games. I would like to know from Matt if he did this. That way I could do apples to apples comparisons for things like "DOMINION" as an amalgamation of base and INTRIGUE. Or FURY OF DRACULA for that matter.

@groth, I don't get to see Matt's list. I just use the numbers he puts here. No idea how far off RAVENLOFT is.

  • avatarjeb

@ Space Ghost, someone has implemented BGG pairwise comparisons here for collections.

    http://www.game-off.com/Dashboard

I have done a bunch o clicking and this is "My Collection Top 10" so far:

    Magic: The Gathering
    Chaos in the Old World
    Arkham Horror
    Nexus Ops
    Speed Circuit
    Titan
    Tales of the Arabian Nights
    Acquire
    Eclipse
    Heroscape Marvel: The Conflict Begins

I wish I could extend the pool a little to include games I have played, as I have played a bunch of games I don't own.

  • avatarSpace Ghost

Jeb - that program is similar to the classic "Q-sort" task, and its primary goal is to help rank your own collection.

Here is something I did sometime ago that reranks the BGG top 100 based on paired comparisons

    http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/2838154#2838154

Anyway, I have been working on something better.

  • avatarMattDP

I had another look at the list to answer some questions. Unfortunately some rankings have changed so take my information with a slight pinch of salt as regards exact positions. Also see below that positions 49 & 50 have changed.

    Games people have missed:

    #50 Starcraft 7.70
    #59 Heroscape 7.66
#68 Last Night On Earth 7.60
    #79 Warhammer Quest 7.49
    #83 Wrath of Ashardalon 7.47
    #90 Imperial 7.45
    #96 Merchant of Venus 7.43
    #98 Talisman 7.42

Castle Ravenloft is way down the list with 7.29

    Quote:

Not really. The point of the exercise is to look at what games, overall, people who proclaim themselves to be Ameritrash fans like and so might be of interest to other people who claim the label. Genre wars (It's AT! No, it's a wargame! No, it's AT!) are very boring and ultimately pointless and I couldn't post an "AT" only list without sparking one.

    Quote:
    1) Why only 49 entries?
    (snip)
    3) Matt's a little off when he says CYCLADES and SUMMONER WARS are new entries--they were there last year (24 --> 38 for CYCLADES; 20 --> 31 for SUMMONER WARS).

My bad. I realised after I started it that I'd got my numbering awry, updated the list entries but forgot to go back and add number #50. The spot goes to Mutant Chronicles with 7.71 rating. Thanks for pointing out about those other games and thanks also for your interesting comparative ratings list.

    Quote:

That's awesome news! That means we can push it off the list and Starcraft comes in at #50 with 7.70 and everything moves down a slot. I'll update my spreadsheet but I can't be bothered to update the article.

    Quote:

I always do it Jan/Feb each year - so just remember to do it around the new year.

And I also have a couple of badge codes if people want to be counted in future - PM me.

  • avatarDair

Jeb, your list of game ranks by ATers compared to overall BGG ranking is interesting. Something that jumps out at me is Earth Reborn. Number 2 on the overall list, but just number 25 by ATers. I assume that means it is more highly ranked by non-Aters than by ATers. Is that right? If so, I am truly surprised by that.

  • avatarjeb

I also have badge codes. Do these expire? I may even have some from last year.

Anyway, Dair, EARTH REBORN scores +0.3, meaning ATers score it slightly higher than BGG at large. This could be from a few things--this game is SO Ameritrash, that perhaps ATers are the only ones playing/rating it. I don't even get that game down if the STONE AGE crowd is around. Cult of the new remnants, also.

  • avatarDair

So the high ranking on Matt's list is a reflection of the game being highly ranked by both groups, not higher by non-ATers. I think this could be an indicator that Earth Reborn may have more crossover appeal than many of us thought. Obviously, there is some noise in the numbers because not all ATers own the badge, but I still find this very interesting. Maybe I need to play this one with someone besides my wife and find out their opinions.

  • avatarjeb

That could be true as well, but I doubt it in this case. EARTH REBORN engenders strong feelings. I would be more inclined to believe only those with the patience to set it up have played it and loved it. The Minis people love it because those minis fucking rock. The AT diehards love it because--COME ON. But the Euro/grognard crowd? They aren't even going to try this thing out.

I wouldn't even try. People are fickle and huge jumps are not uncommon. Stick to the gold and silver games - they're the ones that have bee consistently enjoyed.

Where do you live, Sam? Ever make it to Origins? Because that Arkham blind spot needs cleared up, pronto, and I'm just the nerd to do it.

I believe that they are only good for one year, Jeb.

He lives about 20 minutes drive from me, and about an eight hour flight over the Atlantic for you. So if anyone here is going to pop Sam's AH cherry it'll likely be me :)

  • avatarKen B.

I think it means that, in Earth Reborn's case, what we're measuring is how much more we like a game compared to BGG.

The problem is, if we're the only ones on BGG who like the game, well, that delta is going to be pretty low, as we're just agreeing with ourselves.

    That make sense?

  • avatarSpace Ghost

Yes -- for Jeb's comparison to be really representative, the AT badge holders need to be removed from the BGG average. For most games that won't matter, but for games that aren't rated very much, it will matter quite a bit.

Easy way to get the straight BGG average without AT influence

[(Number of BGG Ratings*BGG Average) - (Number of AT Badge Ratings*AT Badge Average)]/[Number of BGG Ratings - Number of AT Badge Ratings]

  • avatarjeb

Yep. Only Matt's got the raw numbers though. I just use the ratings he drops off in this post and the BGG ones available at their site. I've asked him for the raw data set so I can crystallize this a little more, add some nuance for "families" of games like RAILROAD TYCOON and the like, &c.

This list is superfun. I love playing around with these.
