Fantasy Flight Games to release Battlestar Galactica

New board game released in early Autumn 2008

Roseville, Minnesota (February 6, 2008) – Fantasy Flight Games announced today that they will bereleasing Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game, based on the smash hit series produced by Universal Media Studios and broadcast in the United States on the SCI FI Channel.

“We're happy to have the chance to bring the fun and excitement of Battlestar Galactica to the table,” said Christian T. Petersen, CEO and founder of Fantasy Flight Games. “BSG is a favorite of a great many FFG employees, and we're thrilled to be allowed to play in its universe!”

“Battlestar Galactica’s rich storylines and compelling characters provide the perfect playground for a totally immersive gaming experience,” said Adam Stotsky, Executive Vice President of Global Brand Strategy and Market Development for the SCI FI Channel.

Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game will be a semi-cooperative game, in which players work together to solve problems confronting the fleet, ranging from mechanical to political issues, all the while remaining vigilant for Cylon attacks. However, suspicion clouds the ship and its crew, as one or more players may indeed be a Cylon!

The game will be released by FFG in the Autumn of 2008, between the first and second halves of the popular television show's final season.

Mr Skeletor sayz:

I have only just started watching BSG, ( I'm up to episode 5) so I'll have to be careful to avoid spoilers in the comments section (Please label them so I don't get mad.) So far it's pretty good - It doesn't have muppets so it's not as cool as Farscape of course, but I'm enjoying it loads more than the overhype fest that was Firefly.

As I don't know what happens in the later seasons of the series I'm not sure what form the boardgame will take - certainly at the point I'm up to the Cylons while a constant threat kind of remain hidden, so a full on Cylon vs Human wargame kind of seems inappropriate, as the show focuses more with the day to day drama of being homeless survivors in a moving fleet. The press release hints that this is the direction it's going in.

I'm also not sure what "Semi-co-operative" means. Does one of the players play the cylons against the humans? Does this have a "hidden traitor" mechanic ala Shadows over camelot, which would be very appropriate?

Another interesting aspect is the timing of it's release, which is to be just before the series finishes for good. Does this mean if FFG miss their deadline as per usual they will miss their biggest sales window?

Well I'll be watching the show with renewed interest now, especially wondering if the blonde chick will get the "Dust" boobjob on the game cover. Feel free to share your thoughts below.

EDIT:

I'll append this bit to this article since it's somewhat related and I don't want to blow things off the front page, but there is a great article on FFG here: http://www.startribune.com/local/east/15118981.html

This is the first I have ever heard of the finances of FFG, which is multimillion dollar. But who are the other 9 largest hobby game publishers? I'm assuming Harbro and GW take the top 2 positions, who else is there? Any of the german companies?

  • Mr Skeletor

And now that I read the press release again I see that it does more or less say there is indeed a hidden trator mechanic. What a dickhead.
This is what happens when you try and sneak shit up while at work.

  • avatarubarose

Holy Cow! I can't believe how many games are coming out in 2008 that I am really excited about - Tales of the Arabian Nights, Conan and now Battlestar Galactica.

  • Mr Skeletor

Really? 2008 seemed shit, just conan and thats it.
This sounds good, haven't heard of Tales, is that a rerelease?

  • avatarGary Sax

I don't think this sounds exciting at all, to be honest. It'll definitely have a traitor mechanic. Cylon traitors and everything. Semi cooperative... eh.

  • avatarKen B.

If the Summer Glau thing doesn't work out, I'm totally okay with us converting F:AT into a Tricia Helfer fansite instead.

  • avatarMichael Barnes

    GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!!!!

A total F:AT scoop, and an awesome one at that.

The show is brilliant despite all the nitpick internet fanboy grousing about a couple of episodes- incredibly well made, extremely well written, and it's acutally about something other than just being a science fiction show. It's not "post" anything, it's not quirky or ironic, and it doesn't cater to nerds. It's just good TV.

I'm excited. If there's anyone that knows how to make the most of a great license, it's FFG. And really, this is one of FFG's biggest licenses yet- it has the most crossover appeal of anything they've done barring the LOTR stuff.

Any word on who the design team is on it?

  • Wargamer66

Ya, Frank, Tales is being re-released by Z-Man, and it sounds like they are redeveloping it a bit.

BSG is quite good, and I don't mind a semi-cooperative aspect, I think the market could stand to have a few more coop games. I have an AT-lovin' girlfriend and cooperative games are useful for avoiding the whole "I'm killing your guys" aspect, which comes in handy sometimes.

  • avatarMichael Barnes

The semi-cooperative thing is perfect for the theme- I wouldn't worry about this being a SHADOWS OVER CAMELOT thing as deep and rewarding as doing a header into puddle of mud- remember, this is FFG we're talking about and not Days of Wonder, whom apparently instructs its designers to pick mechanics from Hoyle's Book of Games. I'm waiting for some drop-dead gorgeous "designer" game from them that's some kind of version of Go Fish with pretty art and an alleged theme.

The thing is, the Cylon thing could make for an interesting twist on the traitor mechanic...particularly if there's some function whereby the traitor doesn't even know they're a Cylon until something happens like that part where...oh yeah, Frank's not there yet.

The show is really political, lots of intrigue and drama...it lends itself to a social game very well. Actually, the last time we played CA$H & GUN$ I was kind of thinking it could be converted to a BSG theme...

  • Steve : Wargamer66

Exactly, I don't see how you could make it completely competitive with that theme. Maybe with separate player platters like Princes of Florence!

  • robartin

It's a good show, yeah, but it's no LEXX...

  • Mr Skeletor

LEXX... I think that's the series I'll tackle after I finish BSG.

  • hobb3

The first season was great, the second just OK, the third sank down below average.

As for the boardgame, there is lots of material to take from the TV series, but I assume that the traitor mechanic will be the driving force of the game. The questions is whether they will focus mainly on battles, politics or provide an equally-balanced mix of the two.

There is a huge potential to make an engaging and thematic game with strong characters and storyline which offers multiple paths to victory. I just hope to get a little bit more than a disguised solitaire... cough... SoC... which manages to keep my interest only because of the traitor.

  • avatarKingPut

Excellent news! I'm glad Petersen and FFG are tackling BSG the board game.

  • avatarKen B.

I'll definitely check this out. Though with the announcement just happening now, 2008 seems a very optimistic estimate for release.

  • avatarThaadd

I own Season One of Lexx on DVD. I consider it a test of friendship to make people watch it. I've even inflicted it on guys I like to test their reactions! :) When the Canucks and the Germans decide to make an adult Sci fi show...

I think in my fangirlishness height. I bought the soundtrack CD. When I lived in Sweden, I had a snippet of the Fight Song of the Brunnan Gee play when my computer restarted, but as it was a piece of crap that was really often, and began to irritate me. Seasons past the 1st one are not as good though... a different half-lizard chick, and not as much Undead Goth-Beehive sporting assassin in leather pants....

  • avatarMichael Barnes

I just don't get this "show went downhill" thing...season 3 had episodes that were every bit as strong as anything from season 1- the last show in particular was definitely one of the best. And I almost think season 2 was better than season 1- BSG is the only show where they managed to pull off completely changing the show's dynamic and it actually worked.

RAZOR was definitely on the level too...the whole Kane/Pegasus saga was a very interesting diversion.

  • avatarMalloc

Wow, This looks like it could be great fun. filling in a nitch that Arkham Horror doesn't with the sci-fi theme, and lets hope the whole traitor thing is done a little better than the crappy shadows over Camelot.

I know my group really enjoys the co-op games and with the ability to be a bad guy it will add a nice AT twist to things.

    -M

  • avatarStephen Avery

You guys should try playing with Robartin. There's a traitor in *every* game.

    Steve"TrustNoOne"Avery

  • avatarMichael Barnes

One time Robert Martin convinced me that I was the traitor and I had my character commit suicide out of shame...in a game of TICHU.

  • blarknob

This is the least exiting thing FFG could announce for me, I want more big box games.

It's like all the starwars and startrek crap, mediocre product attached to fanboy license guarantees enough sales to make it worth producing.

I have enough faith in FFG that it will probably be a decent game, but not something I'm gonna bother with.

I've never been able to get Seaon 1 of Lexx. I have 2, 3 and 4, but not 1.

  • avatarThaadd

If you're nice, I'll let you borrow it :)

I got into the show when I was studying abroad. It played on normal, non cable TV in my Student Home in Vaxjo. at 3am. Me and a dork-buddy used to stay up really late drinking wine and watching it. Drinking alot helps the suspension of disbelief needed.

  • TedTorgerson

Does it come with a Lorne Green miniature?

  • Gearhead

This is one of those announcements that make being a gamer a true joy! Heh, if you FFG guys are out there, a follow-up tactical game of the suprise Cylon attack would be great. Think of it as a re-birth of the GW Eldar vs. Tyranid boardgame of the 80's! Can you save enough of humanity to survive as a species?

  • avatarmikoyan

I never watched the new Battlestar Galatica. I enjoyed the original series quite a bit though. I realize the new one is quite a bit different though.

  • avatarThaadd

Any FFG people here are purely Cylon impersonators, and clearly not reading in any official capacity. .

  • Mr Skeletor

I watched the episode last night where the doctor gets accused of helping the Cylons (episode 6 I think.)
The blonde chick in his head suddenly appears in the real world, and then at the end of the episode *disapears* back into his brain (oops, spoiler) - Is this ever explained in a later date or did the show just jump the shark?

I don't think you're really getting this whole Cylon thing. There are only a few models, like Blond Chick, for example, but there are many(?) copies of each model. So Blond Chick Model Alpha was with the doc when the invasion went down, and obliterated--he's either mentally created her or she implanted something in his dome before getting zapped. Meanwhile, a different copy had infiltrated the humans to play the role in the episode you just saw.

I've only seen the first season, so I may be wrong a million times over. Oh well.

The new Battlestar Galatica has a lot more sex and plot. And there's nothing wrong with more sex.

Yes yes, I understand all that, and that is what the episode was leading you to believe - that "real life" blonde chick on the ship (Miss Tess or whatever she was called) was a different Cylon (like arnie in term 1 and 2 - until the end of the episode.
At the end of the episode she 'disapears' and no one can find her anywhere on the fleet, and 'mental' blonde chick appears back in the doc's brain and hints that it was her all along (the altering of the image was suddenly obvious - why would another Cylon want to do that?)

  • avatarmoofrank

Wow. People who like Lexx. I adored the first season, but I couldn't really make it through much of the second season.

Personally, I actually kind of liked a show called Quark, and recently finished watching the Star Wars Christmas Special. So my standards and tastes are perhaps slightly suspect.

There is maybe one game each year that catches my interest before it is released. Therefore, having three at once is unusual for me.

Tales is one of my all time most favorite games, so I am thrilled that it is being re-published.

A semi-cooperative BSG game sounds really intriguing. I have semi-cooperative fantasy and horror games, but nothing sci-fi. Also, it is easier to get the people that I know to play sci-fi themed game than it is to get them to play horror or fantasy themed games.

  • avatarsatanicessence

Mmmmmm....Lexx. I own all the Seasons and have watched them all several times. Season 2 was THE BEST.

    w00t!

  • avatarmikoyan

I vaguely remember Quark. Never saw the Star Wars Holiday Special. For some reason my mom had to go to my Aunt's that night and therefore I had to go. One of these years.

  • robartin

Lexx season 1 has a couple of incredible episodes - the first and the last. Season 2 gets painful quickly but season 3 is actually pretty cool. I haven't watched season 4, but it's the dreaded "return to earth" scenario that means any sci-fi show has run out of money.

Anyhow, the whole series is available on demand for free on Joost so check it out. As a bonus you can catch up on The Dukes of Hazzard, Fantasy Island, and The Transformers.

Thats intereting because most people I know think that season one is only OK while Season 2 is genius. Season three isn't really the same show anymore, it's a lot darker and less ridiculous (which was something I liked about the show) and the whole Fire & Earth and Prince thing gets real annoying. I kept waiting for them to be done with those planets and blow them up like normal, but they stayed there the whole season. Season 4 is more about comedy than anything else. Althogh I wish Prince wasn't still in the damn show. Damn, that guys face starts to really get on your nerves after a while!

Kind of an eerie coincidence... I was just reading the local free weekly, City Pages, and they had an article about the notorious High Bridge of Saint Paul, a favorite spot for locals who want to commit suicide. Anyway, there was a suicide in 1979 by a despondent fan of Battlestar Galactica:

    http://articles.citypages.com/2008-02-06/feature/a-long-way-down/3/

"Perhaps the oddest suicide associated with the High Bridge occurred in 1979. On August 23, 15-year-old St. Paul resident Eddie Seidel Jr. was despondent over the cancellation of his favorite television program, Battlestar Galactica. He wrote to ABC asking that they reconsider the decision, to no avail.

"There were other signs all was not well with the teenager. His father had recently learned that Eddie had been sniffing gas with friends, and sent him to counseling. "The psychiatrist said he was just kind of bored with life, that there was nothing here for him to excel in," his father later told the Associated Press. "There was no real challenge here on this earth."

"Roughly three weeks after the final rerun of Battlestar Galactica aired, Seidel returned home from his job as a supermarket stock boy and retreated to his room. He scrawled a last will and testament and sped off on his moped toward the High Bridge. Police officers responding to the scene attempted to talk the troubled teenager down, but he couldn't be dissuaded from his grim mission. Seidel jumped to his death, landing on the ground below. His family arrived at the scene 10 minutes after the fateful leap.

" "I hope we never ever see [Battlestar Galactica] on TV again, because it would just crush us," his mother, Dawn Seidel, said at the time."

I'm guessing that Dawn isn't a big fan of the new show.

  • avatarMichael Barnes

Poor guy, if only he had waited for the internet...then he could have mounted a letter writing campaign and got it back on TV. Or he could have consoled himself in any number of internet chat rooms and forums. The internet could have saved his life.

But had he waited just a year, perhaps GALACTICA 1980 would have postponed his suicide until 1981. Maybe that explains why GALACTICA 1980 sucked so much...they just did it to keep kids from offing themselves.

Ha ha...I'd love to hear the cops trying to talk him down- "Dude, come on, STAR WARS was better anyway! I mean, you liked Boxey? Look, what if we get Dirk Benedict on the phone?"

  • Nazhuret

The beginning of season 3 suuuuucked.

I don't like watching science fiction only to have the writers use a super huge sledge hammer on me to try to get their political views about real world current events across. Even if I agree with them I hate, hate, hate it and season 3 opener did that BIG time.

Real turn off for me. I have heard the last half got back on track so I suppose I ought to try it again.

Also in their podcast they pretty much said they were making shit up as they went along. I just got a bad taste about the whole thing.

LIke I said though I will likely revisit the series now that my irritation has worn off somewhat. I did love the first two seasons. Those were definitely some of the best TV to come around for a long, long time.
