By now, you've probably heard that SUMMONER WARS is a good one- our very own Matt Drake wrote a review of it something like ten years ago and gave it high praise. I even stole the picture at left from his website. I've been playing the game off and on over the past couple of months and now I've finally gotten around to the write-up and I'm happy to say that Plaid Hat Games is off to a great start. Colby Dauch was kind enough to send me a review copy, and in the next couple of weeks I'm going to be doing an interview with him and we can hopefully get him to spill the beans on some of these secret Hasbro projects he's been involved with. Maybe not.
There may also be a SUMMONER WARS contest in the future- details TBA.
Anyway, the review is in the usual spot over at Gameshark.com. I may be appearing on one of the new "Jumping the Shark" podcasts in the near future rambling on about board games, video games, or both. Stay tuned.

... I won a million dollars in one of Uba's personal contests and I haven't seen it yet, so I wouldn't hold your breath. As for which starter, it's really down to which of the races looks best to you. They are all different and play different, but it's ultimately the same game regardless of which you pick. I find that the Elves/Goblins matchup is a little more interesting because you're looking at units with high range and some tricky abilities. The Dwarves/Orcs box is more about power. It's definitely worth having them both, and apparently there's a set of mercenaries that's coming so you can draft neutral units into your decks. |

... I've played B:FW. That game is more along the lines of Warhammer Fantasy, and while I haven't played Summoner Wars yet, it sounds like another minis-inspired card game, only more along the lines of WARMACHINE. Glad to see another good review for this game. I'm fairly certain my LGS is getting it in for me. |
... I've played both Summoner Wars and Battlegrounds, but they're not at all the same kind of game. Battlegrounds is basically a squad-level miniatures game with cards instead of figures. Summoner Wars is a tactical, strategic, card-driven battle game that comes on fast and finishes with a bang. Basically: Battlegrounds is a good idea if you like miniatures games but don't want to paint minis. Summoner Wars is a good idea if you like games. |
... Battlegrounds and Summoner Wars aren't similar at all. As far as picking a first starter set, you're better off picking a faction whose theme you like since you really can't go wrong with a faction's special abilities. Plus, you'll find different people can play the same faction in different ways. |
... Contest confirmed. Details forthcoming. I think ya'll are going to like this one. As for BATTLEGROUNDS, it is a miniatures game played with pictures instead of figures. It's OK. Much more involved than SUMMONER WARS. SUMMONER WARS is closer to MANOEVURE, DREAMBLADE, ANACHRONISM (but a billion times better) and other "units on a grid" games. |
... Let me leak some of the contest details. (Hope Barnes doesn't mind.) It is going to be a design a mercenary unit contest. There will be prizes for multiple winners, but top prize will include a version of your unit going into production. Thanks for the support, it means a lot. I'm glad you enjoyed the game! |
... Metalface, I'll include free future stuff in the prize list as well, so you can maximize your winnings potential. I think the contest is supposed to start on the 11th. You can also check out the summoner wars website for more info on the game including rules and a faction section that has all of the card powers to date in it. |
