Wonder - Barney's Incorrect Five Second Reviews
There Will Be Games

So this was a big experiment for me. I wanted to bring 7-yr old Emily to her first non-kid movie that's not a cartoon. I thought this would be a good one since it deals with bullying and going to school and all that.

It's adapted from the book about a young home-schooled boy who begins to attend real school. He was born with a bunch of physical abnormalities and after several plastic surgeries, his parents decide he's ready to go to school with real kids. So you can imagine what the movie is basically about: acceptance, bravery, bullying, and all that.

The surprising element that makes this movie special is that it also focuses on tertiary characters in a pretty deep and profound way. Lost friends and such, what are their motivations and why did they come in and out of the lives of Auggie and his family. The way the sister becomes constant second fiddle to everything (because she has no health problems or anything for the parents to constantly worry about) becomes an interesting thing to explore.

Owen Wilson is pretty fun as the dad, and how he's scared to death of his wife played by Julia Roberts (who I haven't missed AT ALL from movies). The movie is good with lots of decent performances from Auggies friends and sister mostly.

Most importantly, Emily not only enjoyed it but wanted to see it again. So i'm glad to know I'm not stuck anymore only having to see cartoons (since they can't all be Coco's after all).
