I really like WAR FOR EDADH. It's an inexpensive yet pretty detailed and rich game that, if it lives up to the potential that all the proposed expansions and add-ons suggests, could wind up an amazing and unique addition to the fantasy gaming canon. EDADH isn't quite like anything I've ever played- it feels more like UP FRONT than anything else but then it has all these oddball mechanics from out of nowhere that make it feel like something pretty fresh. I really dig that the game is modular- you can play simple "best of three" skirmishes with limited rules and troop types or you can go all out and do full-on set piece battles with a bunch of terrain types, different units, tactics cards, standards, manuever, flanking, and a whole host of other wargamey stuff that I didn't expect from the game at all. The expansions are going to add heroes, quests, and other more rounded features to really tell the full story of the titular War for Edadh. And yeah, that's "ee-dath", as in Edith. Kind of.

Anyway, I had intended to do a full review of the game but I also wanted to do an interview with Warrior Elite, the DIY upstarts who have designed and published the game. It's at Gameshark.com right now. I think it turned out to be a pretty great conversation, they had a lot to say about the game and also about iindie publishing in the hobby market. Plus they were funny and didn't just feed me "party line" pseudo-marketing stuff, and I really appreciated that. I think you folks will too. Anyway, this is part I and part II is next week. Review after that.

I ordered it about a week ago, and am waiting for it to be delivered. I was fairly impressed that the designer followed up my order with a rather pleasant email. Now I have to do is wait for Customs to let me have the damn thing.

Will there be an official review at some point?

You know, while browsing the cards are rules the other night I noticed that there's a lot of chicks marching into battle on this one. Is the reason for that covered in the materials at all? Seemed a bit surprising given the theme.

    Sag.

This interview just reminds me of how my heart was broken last year over the Hero Card games.

Here was a small little company offering something completely novel, with top shelf components, priced at 25$ retail. Then they had to abandon the entire line for their flagship europoop game, which was selling much better becuase Vasel gave it the thumbs up.

HeroCard had potential, but the system just wasn't enough to support what they were trying to do with it. I thought the card system felt a little halfbaked, although the games (particularly the samurai one and ORC WARS) showed a lot of ingenuity and interesting gameplay. And they were reasonably priced- I think that model of having a two player base game and then small, $10 expansions to add players is a great idea.

The EDADH review will be in two weeks. I was reluctant to run something about the game three weeks in a row, but it's a s-l-o-w news...uh...quarter. And this segment was more about the company anyway.

I wasn't in totally in love with HeroCard, but I liked Rise of the Shogun and Orc Wars, and even the crappy games in the line could still be used as expansions for the good ones.

It was just depressing to see a smaller player have to jump on the euro bandwagon to stay afloat when their games had as much potential as they did. But, hell, even FFG had to do it at one time I guess.

Um, if this comment made any sense, Tom Vasel's favorite game, Dual of Ages, would be the most popular and highest selling game ever instead of wallowing in mediocre ratings and reviews.
