Inside abandoned hospitals, secret laboratories, and forgotten cellars, scientists are conducting depraved experiments that will drag humanity to the brink of the abyss. Only a small group of investigators can discover the truth and put an end to these mad plots before it’s too late...

This exciting expansion provides players with new investigators, as well as new Trauma, Mythos, and Combat cards for use in any story. Forbidden Alchemy also includes three new tales of scientific horrors, in which investigators will encounter new rooms, monsters, items, clues, locks, and obstacles. Try to solve the new Alchemy puzzles, if you dare. But be warned, the side effects may prove deadly!

  • 4 new investigators - Darrell Simmons, Doctor Vincent Lee, Dexter Drake, Carolyn Fern
  • 3 new scenarios - “Return of the Reanimator,” “Yellow Matter,” “Lost in Time and Space”
  • 2 new monster types
  • 6 new map tiles
  • 250 new cards
  • 40 tokens and markers

This expansion is supposed to have fixes for the card errors in the base game, yes? If so, I think I'll buy them both shortly after this releases. The game looks awesome and I think my wife would dig it, but I don't want to deal with a bunch of mistakes.

I like Dexter and Carolyn. Dr. Lee is an okay character, but I've never liked his portrait. Darrell is totally forgetable.

2 new monster types YAY. They look cool too. All those zombies, cultists and witches in the base game were a bit dull. I rather have monsters on the board that look like monsters. Plus, they are way more fun to paint.

Not entirely thrilled about the "scientific" theme of this expansion. When I think Lovecraft, mad scientist isn't what comes to mind.

Come on, Uba. Herbert West, Crawford Tillinghast, THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE...

That is what they said. I believe that the second printing also corrected all the mistakes in the rule and scenario books, except for the map layout for Green Eyed Boy.

I assume that the handful of rules corrections from the first edition rule book that can not be put on cards will be included in this expansion's rule book, as well as the FAQ's.

I really wish they would put out the corrected base game scenario book in PDF for those of us that have the first edition.

Yay. Finally out. And I expect I'll have some gift money to spend in about a week.

I haven't played this a lot since it came out but I have played it just enough, I figure, to buy the expansion. I like this model their using and I figure they're releasing stuff just fast enough to keep up with the speed I play at. It's nice because I don't see myself buying many new games now but expansions are fair game and no one needs to learn much more to play.

    @JonJacob,

Have you played with The Season of the Witch expansion? It really makes the game shine. In comparison it makes the scenarios included in the base game seem like tutorials.

  • avatarJonJacob

I picked it up based on your reccomendation actually and looked it over a bit. You can't really dig in until you play with this stuff. We're supposed to play it this month. I saw a review of it on BGG that was pretty negative but I just ignored that and bought it anyway. 15$ or so.. big deal. I start holidays Friday so anytime after that is game on time!

Did you try the second stand alone scenario? I've heard it was considerably weaker so I haven't bought it. I figure this expansion is out now so I can probably skip that anyway. But Season of the Witch is a must play first.

  • avatarubarose

I saw one review on BGG that mostly complained about there not being more stuff in the scenario. Which is like DUH, it's a small card expansion. It's not going to have new monsters.

I didn't find the other one particularly negative. It said that SotW was better than scenarios 2, 3 and 4 in the base game. I agree with that. The person also said that scenarios 1 and 5 in the base game were his favorate and SotW was not better than these. I disagree with this, because scenarios 1 and 5 were my least favorite so I think 2,3 and 4 were even better than 1 and 5.

I skipped the second stand alone too.

It looks like it's just an improper name for one card. Not a deal breaker but bad news for FFG since the first game was so riddled with typos even non gamer strippers know about it.

No man it's more than that. See the details here.
Chris Peterson had to release an apology on FGG's here for the HUGE fuck up.

  • avatarJonJacob

I know. A lot has changed since I wrote that. I've been posting about this on BGG. I'm surprised no one has posted about it here till now.

No worry though, you get a free shitty novel!

  • avatarubarose

That seals it. Mansions of Madness gets my vote for most FUBAR of 2011.

  • Mr Skeletor

The free Novel is a class act. He could have given you a free "we have your money go fuck yourself" like every other company does these days.
Have you read the novel Jon? Second time I have seen you refer to it as "shit", yet the reviews of the first 2 (android and the other arkham one) indicate they were enjoyable pulp.

  • avatarJonJacob

No I haven't read it, I hate that kind of crap out of hand and blindly. I'll openly admit to it being a bias of mine. You can say I'm arrogant or pretentious or whatever, it's not my kind of literature.

It's a nice note and I appreciate the offer, I'm just joking about the quality of the book... although I know I would hate it. Those things aren't written for me.
